UK Entry Requirements for Singapore Students: A Levels, IB and Polytechnic Diplomas

UK medical schools hold Singaporean qualifications in high regard, and most publish a Singapore-specific offer. The typical requirements:

• Singapore-Cambridge GCE A Levels: AAA in three H2 subjects, almost always including Chemistry and Biology, with a pass in a contrasting H1 subject and Project Work. Some schools also set O Level requirements in English and Mathematics in place of GCSEs
• International Baccalaureate: 36 to 42 points overall, with 6, 6, 6 or 7, 6, 6 at Higher Level including Chemistry and Biology. Most offers sit at 38 or 39
• International A Levels (Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel) taken at an international school: treated as UK A Levels by nearly every medical school, typically AAA or A*AA including Chemistry and Biology
• Polytechnic diploma: possible but uncommon and very competitive. Schools that consider it want a relevant science or health diploma with a near-perfect GPA, and several will not accept it at all, so email each admissions office before you commit a UCAS choice
• NUS High School Diploma: not on most published lists. Ask each school directly and expect to be asked for A Level or IB equivalence

SMC-Recognised UK Medical Schools: The Second Schedule List

The Singapore Medical Council (SMC) registers doctors from overseas medical schools only if the school appears in the Second Schedule of the Medical Registration Act. A degree from a listed school lets you apply for conditional registration, then full registration after a supervised period, without sitting a separate Singapore licensing examination. A degree from an unlisted school does not. Families who want to keep the option of practising in Singapore open filter by this list, alongside UCAT use, interview format and fees.

The Second Schedule was revised with effect from 1 January 2025, when five UK schools were added (Aberdeen, Leeds, Newcastle, Queen’s University Belfast and Warwick), and again from 1 February 2026, when eight more overseas schools joined, two of them in the UK: City St George’s, University of London and the University of Exeter. That takes the Schedule to 120 overseas medical schools, 26 of them in the UK. The list is reviewed periodically, and the SMC only accepts the exact qualification named against each school, so confirm both the school and the degree title against the official Second Schedule before you finalise your UCAS choices.

Each name above links to our profile of that school: entry requirements, how it uses the UCAT, interview format and application tips. Keele, Hull York, Lancaster, Plymouth, Brighton and Sussex, Norwich, Sunderland, Anglia Ruskin, Kent and Medway, Aston, Edge Hill, Lincoln, Swansea and the University of Lancashire are not on the Schedule. Nor is St Andrews, which some older lists showed: its medicine students complete the degree at a partner school, so check the awarding school. One trap to know about. Brunel, Buckingham, the University of Lancashire (formerly UCLan) and Queen Mary’s Malta campus accept direct international applications outside the four UCAS medicine choices, which makes them tempting insurance options. None of them appears in the SMC Second Schedule, so a graduate of those courses cannot register in Singapore through the standard route.

UCAT in Singapore: Test Centres, Dates and Fees

The UCAT is the admissions test for nearly every standard-entry medicine course in the UK, and it is also the test NTU uses, so one sitting in Singapore can serve both applications. Singapore candidates sit the UCAT (UK), not the UCAT ANZ. You cannot sit both in the same year: UCAT treats multiple testing as misconduct and cancels every result.

Where can I sit the UCAT in Singapore?

The UCAT is delivered at Pearson VUE test centres, booked through your UCAT account. When we searched the UCAT test centre locator on 14 October 2026 it listed three centres in Singapore: the Pearson Professional Centre at 51 Cuppage Road, NTUC LearningHub at 180 Clemenceau Avenue (Haw Par Centre) and Agilitics at 10 Anson Road (International Plaza). The next nearest are in Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. Three centres is not many for a country where JC2 and IB students all want July and August dates, so register the day registration opens in May and book the day booking opens in June. Not every centre offers UCAT slots on every date, so check the locator inside your UCAT account once you have registered.

UCAT 2026 dates (2027 entry)

Since 2025 the UCAT has three scored cognitive subtests, Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning, each scaled from 300 to 900 for a total out of 2700, plus a Situational Judgement Test reported as Band 1 (highest) to Band 4. Abstract Reasoning was withdrawn in 2025, so ignore any Singapore forum advice built on the old 3600 scale. There is no negative marking, and the UCAT bursary is only open to UK candidates.

What UCAT Score Do Singapore Applicants Need?

The 2026 mean total score was 1918 (Verbal Reasoning 602, Decision Making 640, Quantitative Reasoning 675), and the top 10 percent of candidates scored 2250 or above. The Situational Judgement Test bands were distributed 15 percent Band 1, 40 percent Band 2, 34 percent Band 3 and 11 percent Band 4.

International places at each UK medical school are a small fixed quota, so international applicants compete mainly against each other and a strong UCAT matters more, not less. As a rule of thumb, 2300 to 2500 makes you competitive at most schools that take international students, and above 2500 is competitive everywhere. Several schools use the SJT as a filter, so a Band 4 can rule you out regardless of your total. Singapore students usually score well on Quantitative Reasoning; Verbal Reasoning under time pressure is the subtest most often left until too late.

For NTU, the published range for students admitted in AY2025-26 was 2690 to 3170 on the old 3600 scale (10th to 90th percentile), which is roughly 2070 to 2440 on the 2700 scale used from 2025. NUS asks for the UCAT only from applicants with international qualifications or predicted IB results, and publishes no threshold. Applying to the UK and to NUS or NTU in the Same Year

Most competitive Singaporean applicants do not choose between the UK and Singapore: they apply to four SMC-recognised UK schools through UCAS in October and to NUS Yong Loo Lin and NTU Lee Kong Chian between December and March, with the same UCAT result serving both. Run as one plan, the two applications share most of their work. Run separately, they collide in the busiest months of JC2.

What transfers is the thinking, not the text: the work experience you reflect on, the reasons you give for medicine, the ethical scenarios you have practised and the NHS and MOH knowledge behind them. The UK statement is written first because its deadline comes first, and the NUS and NTU submissions are adapted from it. Interview preparation works the same way: MMI stations for the UK in the autumn are the same skills NTU’s MMI tests in the spring, with Singapore-specific content (MediSave, MediShield Life, the public healthcare clusters) layered on top of the NHS material.

National Service: Applying Before, During or After NS

For male Singapore citizens and second-generation permanent residents this is the section that decides the whole plan. Full-time National Service is enlisted at around 18, after A Levels or the IB, and lasts two years. The Central Manpower Base is explicit that deferment "will not be granted for degree courses, even if you have already begun the course", and overseas deferment stops at A Level or diploma level, so a UK medical degree starts after your Operationally Ready Date (ORD), not before. The planning question is not whether to do NS first but when to apply, and the answer most families expect, "apply in JC2 and ask the university to hold the place for two years", is the one the UK medical schools mostly do not offer.

Can a UK medical school hold an offer for two years of NS?

Rarely, and you should not plan around it. We read the current published deferred-entry policy of seventeen SMC-recognised UK medical schools on 14 October 2026. Not one of them publishes a two-year deferral for medicine. The schools that mention national service at all cap it at one year for medicine: King’s allows two years for compulsory service on other courses but "can only allow a deferral of one academic year for compulsory military service for medicine and dentistry applicants", and Edinburgh considers deferral for medicine only for national service, "for up to one year only". Liverpool does not normally allow deferred entry for international applicants at all. The one published exception is at college level in Cambridge: Magdalene College states that it will consider two-year deferred places for male Singaporean applicants because of NS, if you declare it explicitly in your application. Other Cambridge colleges set their own rules.

Policies change every cycle and a published page is not an email from an admissions office. If you want to try a JC2 application with a deferral, write to each school with your enlistment and expected ORD dates before you apply, and keep the reply.

The two windows that work

• NS year one, for entry straight after ORD. You hold your actual A Level or IB results, sit the UCAT on leave in the July to September window, apply in October for the September after ORD, and interview online in the evening, Singapore time, between November and March. This is the window most of our Singaporean students use, and it needs no deferral at all
• NS year two, for entry the September after ORD with a short gap, or a year later. The advantage is a second UCAT attempt and a second application if the first did not land. The cost is a year, which some families decide is worth it for a stronger shortlist

Disruption from NS

Disruption lets a full-time serviceman leave early to start university, but it is a cohort rule, not a medicine rule: it exists so that a man who enlisted later than his school cohort can start university in the same year as his peers, from the first ORD date of his cohort, and it needs an unconditional offer. The medicine-specific scheme, where shortlisted servicemen are disrupted to study medicine and serve afterwards as SAF medical officers, applies to NUS and NTU, and MINDEF ended disruption for overseas medical study in 1992. Unless you enlisted late, treat your ORD as your earliest UK start date and plan backwards from it.

Use the NS years well. A medic or EMT posting is clinical experience few UK applicants can match, and any posting gives you examples of responsibility, teamwork and pressure that interviewers ask about. Keep a short reflective log, and keep reading: the NHS does not stand still for two years.

What It Costs in Singapore Dollars: Fees, Visa Money and Funding

A UK medical degree for an international student is a five or six-year investment, and the fee is fixed in pounds while the family budget is in Singapore dollars. The conversions below use £1 = about S$1.70 (the European Central Bank reference rates on 13 October 2026) and are rounded; check the live rate when you plan and budget with a buffer for a weaker dollar.

Published international tuition fees for the 2026/27 academic year at a sample of SMC-recognised schools (2027/28 fees are published through the autumn and spring and are usually a few percent higher):

Across all UK medical schools the 2026/27 range runs from about £30,150 a year (S$51,000) in the pre-clinical years at the cheapest schools to £70,554 (S$119,600) at Cambridge, with most clinical years between £45,000 and £60,000 (S$76,000 to S$102,000). Over a five or six-year course that is roughly S$390,000 to S$710,000 in tuition alone. Other money you must plan for:

• Student visa maintenance: the rule is first-year fees plus £1,529 a month for courses in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to nine months (about S$23,300 in London or S$17,900 elsewhere), held for 28 consecutive days. Singapore is on the Home Office differential evidence list, so Singaporean applicants are not asked to submit the bank statements up front, but the money must exist and can be requested
• The Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 a year for students (about S$1,320 a year), paid up front for the length of the visa
• The Student visa application fee from outside the UK is £558 (about S$950), and you can apply up to six months before the course starts
• Living costs of roughly £12,000 to £18,000 a year (S$20,000 to S$30,500) depending on the city, with London at the top of that range

Singapore funding: the MOH Holdings Pre-Employment Grant

Singapore is unusual in offering a public funding route for citizens studying medicine overseas. The MOH Holdings (MOHH) Pre-Employment Grant is open to Singaporean students at an SMC-recognised overseas medical school, and that recognition is the gateway, so families weighing the grant should check the Second Schedule before they finalise choices. On the terms published in October 2026 the grant covers up to 60 percent of the tuition fees for the remaining years of the course, capped at S$50,000 a year and S$150,000 in total; you apply midway through the degree, selection is on merit with an interview, and the bond is three years of service for a one-year grant or four years for a two- or three-year grant, in each case including the housemanship year served in Singapore. Read the current MOHH page before you count on it: amounts and bond terms change, and the Healthcare Merit Award on the MOHH scholarships portal covers nursing, pharmacy and allied health, not medicine.

On the UK side, be realistic. Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships are for postgraduate study, Imperial’s medicine scholarships are for home students, and the few international awards medical schools advertise are typically a few thousand pounds off the first year. Treat any UK scholarship as a bonus, never as the plan.

English Language and the Student Visa for Singapore Applicants

Singapore is not on the UK Home Office list of majority English-speaking countries, so the Student visa’s English requirement (CEFR B2) is not met by nationality alone. In practice it rarely causes a problem: a university that is a licensed Higher Education Provider assesses your English itself, and most UK medical schools accept a Singapore-Cambridge GCE O Level in English Language at the grade they specify, or an IB English grade, in place of IELTS. Where a school does ask for IELTS Academic, medicine thresholds are high, typically 7.0 to 7.5 overall with no component below 6.5 or 7.0, and there are plenty of IELTS centres in Singapore.

Quote the school, never a single "medicine IELTS": our IELTS requirements for UK medical schools guide lists every school. Singapore is not on the list of countries whose residents need a tuberculosis test for a UK visa, and ATAS clearance is not required for an undergraduate MBBS.

How to Apply Through UCAS from Singapore

All applications to UK medical schools go through UCAS, exactly as they do for UK students. The key facts for 2027 entry:

• The deadline for medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, which is 01:00 on 16 October in Singapore. Treat the end of 15 October Singapore time as your real deadline
• Applications for 2027 entry opened on 12 May 2026 and could be submitted from 1 September 2026
• You can use a maximum of four of your five choices for medicine. The fifth can be another subject, and many international applicants use it for biomedical science as an insurance option
• You need predicted grades from your JC or school, a reference from a teacher, and a personal statement in the three-question UCAS format

Work experience in Singapore is usually arranged through family contacts, the public hospitals’ structured programmes, polyclinics, nursing homes and community volunteering, and NS medic or EMT postings count for a great deal when you reflect on them properly. Interviews from Singapore: Online, in UK Time

Most UK medical schools now interview international applicants online, in the MMI format, between November and March. A few have offered interviews in Singapore in past cycles, including Barts and Manchester, and a small number still prefer in-person interviews in the UK, so check each of your four choices. Live online interviews are scheduled in UK time, which usually means a late afternoon or evening slot in Singapore.

Interviewers expect you to understand medicine in the UK. Research the NHS, its six core values and the current NHS hot topics, and read UK health news for ten minutes a day. Then use your advantage: a Singaporean applicant can compare MediSave, MediShield Life and the public cluster system with a tax-funded NHS in a way UK applicants cannot, and an ethics station rewards that kind of perspective. NS gives you real examples of teamwork, responsibility and resilience; reflect on specific situations rather than listing duties.

Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine from Singapore

Dentistry: Singapore has one dental school, at NUS, so a large share of Singaporean dentistry applicants look to the UK. The Singapore Dental Council keeps its own list of registrable dental qualifications in the Schedule to the Dental Registration Act. Thirteen UK dental schools are on it today (Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, Queen’s Belfast, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Wales), and a revised Schedule takes effect on 1 January 2029 with twelve: Cardiff is named, Edinburgh drops off, and from that date every foreign-trained dentist sits the SDC qualifying examination before conditional registration. A 2027 entrant graduates in 2032, so a family keeping Singapore practice open should plan on the 2029 list and the exam. Veterinary medicine: Singapore has no veterinary school, so every Singaporean vet applies overseas. The Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) under NParks licenses vets with a degree from a school fully accredited by the RCVS, the AVMA or the AVBC, which covers every UK vet school, so a UK degree needs no further examination in Singapore. Can I Stay and Work in the UK After Graduating?

Yes, and the position for international graduates of UK medical schools improved in 2026. The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, which received Royal Assent on 5 March 2026, defines a UK medical graduate as the holder of a UK primary medical qualification, excluding only those who spent all or most of their training outside the British Islands. An international student who completes the whole degree at a UK medical school is therefore in the prioritised group for Foundation Programme places, and NHS England has confirmed that from 2027 the prioritisation applies at both shortlisting and offer.

• Foundation Programme: you apply through your medical school in the same way as home students. You must declare your visa status on the application, and visa sponsorship is arranged after allocation
• Graduate visa: two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 onwards. Anyone starting in 2027 will graduate under the 18-month rule, so plan on the shorter period
• Health and Care Worker visa: doctors are eligible, there is no Immigration Health Surcharge on this route, and the application fee is £324 for up to three years or £628 for longer

Immigration rules change frequently. Treat this as the position on 7 September 2026 and confirm on GOV.UK before you rely on it.

Keeping Your Options Open: SMC Recognition and Registration in Singapore

A UK medical degree leads to registration with the General Medical Council and the NHS Foundation Programme, where UK graduates now have priority under the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, and most of our international students plan their careers in the UK. The facts below are for families who want the option of practising in Singapore kept open.

UK graduates receive provisional registration with the General Medical Council and full registration after Foundation Year 1, and every UK medical school now builds the UK Medical Licensing Assessment into finals. A Singaporean who completes F1 and F2 in the UK holds GMC full registration and two years of NHS experience, which keeps UK specialty training open and is also the profile many MOHH-bonded doctors bring to Singapore.

There is no Singapore licensing examination for graduates of Schedule schools; instead there are two registration routes, and which one applies depends on whether you have done a housemanship year. Foundation Year 1 in the UK, the natural first step after graduation, counts as one: a doctor who has completed it applies for conditional registration with a certificate of experience, works under supervision in an SMC-approved institution, and then applies for full registration. A graduate without a housemanship year applies instead for provisional registration, must start PGY1 (housemanship) in Singapore within two years of graduating, and applies through the local employer, usually MOHH. Singapore registration does not require the UK Foundation Programme, and the MOHH grant bond is written around the Singapore housemanship route.

Applying to the UK from Singapore: A Timeline for 2027 and 2028 Entry

Work backwards from the UCAS deadline. Two versions of the plan, because NS splits Singapore applicants into two groups:

Applying from JC2 or IB Year 2 (applicants who will not enlist)

• JC1: confirm H2 Chemistry and Biology (or HL for IB), start work experience and volunteering, keep a reflective diary, and begin slow UCAT practice from the spring
• May and June of JC1: register for the UCAT in May and book on the day booking opens in June. Take the July or August slot so the score is in hand before you choose schools
• June to August: intensive UCAT preparation, then the test. Draft the personal statement in August with the UCAT out of the way
• September and October of JC2: choose four schools around your UCAT score and predicted grades, checking the SMC list if practising in Singapore is a possibility, confirm each school’s deferral position if you will enlist, and submit before 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time
• November to March: online interviews in UK time; NUS and NTU applications in the same months, adapted from the UCAS work
• March to August: A Level results in March (Singapore-Cambridge) or IB results in July, firm your offer, pay the deposit, receive your CAS and apply for the Student visa up to six months before the course starts

Applying from NS (applicants who will enlist)

• JC2, before enlistment: finish work experience and volunteering while you still have time, keep notes you can reflect on later, and do not sit the UCAT yet, because a UCAT result is only valid for one application cycle
• NS year one, May and June: register and book the UCAT for a summer date you can take on leave; prepare on evenings and book-out weekends
• NS year one, July to September: sit the UCAT, draft the personal statement
• NS year one, October: submit the UCAS application for the September after ORD, and apply to NUS and NTU from December
• NS year one, November to March: online interviews from camp or home in the evening, Singapore time
• NS year two: hold the offer, confirm the visa timeline against your ORD date, and arrive in the UK for induction in September

2. If you will enlist, decide now which window you are applying in and confirm each school’s two-year deferral position in writing
3. Be honest about the budget in Singapore dollars, including the visa maintenance evidence and the 28-day rule, and read the current MOHH scheme terms
4. Register and book your UCAT the day booking opens
5. Start UCAT preparation with a tutor at least three months in advance
6. Draft your personal statement early and have it reviewed
7. Submit your UCAS application before 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, then adapt the same material for NUS and NTU
