Course Structure of BMBS Exeter
The five-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) programme draws on the strength of the partnership with the NHS in Devon and Cornwall to provide a unique learning experience in healthcare.
Clinical Placements In the later years of the programme you will be immersed in the clinical environment with extensive opportunities for learning from patients as you move through the pathways of the patient care programme.
Community Placements The community placements provide experience of the multi-professional nature of medicine and the importance of the healthcare team.
In your final year, you will learn the job of medicine and start to develop your own clinical practice in preparation for graduation. You’ll undertake a series of apprenticeship attachments in NHS hospitals across the South West.

Intercalation between years 3 and 4
An intercalated degree provides the opportunity to explore another discipline at degree level, bringing added breadth and depth to your study. You may have the opportunity to intercalate and study 120 credits from another Bachelor’s degree (usually the final year) or a one-year Masters degree from a wide range of options available at the University of Exeter.
Although intercalation means an extra year of study, it can enhance the undergraduate experience by providing additional specialist knowledge and transferable skills which can be a real asset in your future professional life.

Graduates (degree requirements)
Exeter Medical School Entry Requirements for Graduate Candidates
Exeter does not run a separate graduate-entry medicine course. Graduates apply to the same five-year BMBS A100 programme, but are classed as Non-Direct School Leavers: applicants for whom it will be more than two full academic years (September to August) since they completed their A levels or equivalent qualifications. This includes all graduate applicants.
Non-Direct School Leavers sit the Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) rather than the UCAT, and applications are sorted by overall GAMSAT score. GAMSAT results stay valid for two years.
There is one exception. Final-year students on Exeter's own BSc or MSci Medical Sciences, BSc Biomedical Sciences, BSc Neuroscience or BSc Sports and Exercise Medical Sciences courses apply without sitting either the UCAT or GAMSAT, and are shortlisted for interview if they are predicted a 2:1 or a First.

- Up to a two-grade adjustment: an area with low participation in higher education (POLAR4 or TUNDRA MSOA quintiles 1 to 2) at a state school, IMD quintiles 1 to 2 at a state school, named non-selective state schools in the south west and Wales, free school meals at a state school, the Elephant Group, IntoUniversity or Bridges to HE, the SEREN partnership in Wales, or carers, estranged students and those with parental responsibility
- Up to a three-grade adjustment: care leavers looked after for 13 weeks or more since age 14, care experienced applicants, Exeter Scholars, Realising Opportunities, Sutton Trust Pathways, the Mature Access Pathway, or asylum seekers and those with refugee or humanitarian protection status
Contextual offer of AAB against a typical A*AA for 2027 entry, with Biology and Chemistry still required at grade A. In IB terms 34 with 665 against 38 with 766. Because medicine carries subject requirements, the published medicine figure is a two-grade reduction rather than the three-grade category.
Exeter's own page warns that where programmes have specific subject requirements the grade adjustment may differ from the headline categories. A footnote on the course page is stale and refers to an earlier cycle, though the published figure is on the 2027-entry page.
