Overview of Barts and the London Medical School


Located in Whitechapel in East London, Barts and the London school of Medicine and Dentistry ranks highly on university league tables. Course Structure at Barts Medical School

Barts Medicine is 5 years long with Integrated and Problem-Based learning. No pre-clinical: you see patients from Term 1, with the opportunity to intercalate based on your academic performance. This programme is divided into three phases (cores): 

  • Phase 1 - Body in Health (Year 1 and Year 2), Mechanisms of Disease (Year 1 and Year 2) 

  • Phase 2 - Clinical Basis of Medicine (Year 3 and Year 4) 

  • Phase 3 - Preparation for Practice (Year 5) Students also complete their Intermediate Life Support qualification.

Queen Mary Medical School Entry Requirements


777666 (AAABBB) to include Biology (or Human Biology), Chemistry, English Language, and Mathematics (or Additional Mathematics or Statistics). 

The Science Double Award may substitute all sciences at GCSE.

A Levels


Must include Chemistry or Biology A levels in one sitting over no longer than a 2 year period


38 points 

A minimum of 6 points in the Higher Level science subjects and 6 points in the third Higher Level subject. You must offer: three subjects, including Chemistry or Biology and one other science or mathematical subject at Higher Level, and three subjects at Standard Level including Chemistry or Biology if not offered at the Higher Level. If English is not offered as part of the diploma, it must be offered at GCSE, at grade B or above or acceptable equivalent.

Scottish Higher


Including Biology and Chemistry. Scottish Highers are not accepted alone. You must offer Advanced Highers. Candidates must offer grades at AA in Advanced Highers in two of the subjects offered at Scottish Highers, including Chemistry and/or Biology.

How Does Barts Medical School Look At The UCAT?

Top three deciles only - bottom seven deciles are rejected. Usually it is weighted 50:50 with academics. In 2020 the minimum score was 2300 for interview. 

SJT score may form part of assessment at interview.






Course Information

Graduate Entry

Barts Graduate Medicine Entry Programme MBBS (GEP) (4 Years), Full time - 40 places.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) / Oral Medicine – 3 Years
- Entry on to year 3 of the 5 year MBBS programme is designed specifically for qualified dentists who are fully registered with the General Dental Council and members of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) or the British Society for Oral Medicine (BSOM).



Queen Mary Medical School Intercalation Year (BSc) is present. 

If you have not already achieved a degree prior to entry, you will have the opportunity (subject to your academic performance) to take an extra year of studies leading to a Bachelor of Science (BSc).

Selectors strongly recommend that candidates have explored what a career in medicine entails and that this is reinforced by work experience. The interview will explore your understanding of the realities of a career in medicine. We recognise the challenge of obtaining work experience and a period of volunteering in a caring role can be equally as valuable.
