Studying Dentistry in the UK as an International Student: A Complete Guide for 2027 Entry

Dentistry is the hardest undergraduate course in the UK for an international student to get into, and not because the academic bar is higher than medicine. It is because the number of places is tiny. Several dental schools admit three or four international students a year, and a few admit none.

This guide is for school leavers outside the UK, whether in Canada, the USA, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Middle East, Africa or Europe, who want a UK Bachelor of Dental Surgery. It covers which dental schools take international applicants and how many, the UCAT, how your qualification is treated, fees, the Student visa, interviews, and what a UK BDS is worth when you go home, including the important fact that Canada does not recognise it automatically.

Which UK Dental Schools Accept International Students?

The Dental Schools Council lists 15 standard-entry BDS courses for 2027 entry, plus graduate-entry programmes at Aberdeen, King’s and Lancashire, and a new school at the University of East Anglia taking its first students in September 2027. Their published positions on international applicants:

Add those up and the entire UK admits well under a hundred international dental students a year. Two consequences follow. First, every element of your application has to be strong, because you are competing with the best international applicants in the world for a handful of seats. Second, the newer schools, Portsmouth and UEA, have more international capacity than the established ones and deserve a place on your shortlist.

The Department of Health and Social Care has told the Dental Schools Council that it plans a minimum NHS service requirement expected to apply to students entering a dental course from the 2027/28 academic year. The detail has not been published. Watch for it, because it may affect international graduates differently.

UCAT for International Dentistry Applicants

Every UK BDS in the Dental Schools Council guide lists the UCAT as its admissions test, so an international applicant sits it exactly as a UK applicant does. Dundee will consider exempting applicants certified as having no test centre in their country; otherwise assume it is compulsory.

The test has three scored subtests, Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning, each 300 to 900 for a total out of 2700, plus a Situational Judgement Test reported as Band 1 (highest) to Band 4. Dental schools lean on the SJT more than many medical schools:

Manchester rejects applicants with SJT Band 3 or 4
Queen Mary requires Band 1 to 3 and a total score in the fourth decile or above
Sheffield requires Band 1 or 2
Liverpool states that Band 4 is not competitive
Bristol published separate UCAT interview thresholds for 2026 entry: 2340 for home applicants and 1970 for overseas applicants

You sit the test at a Pearson VUE centre found through the locator inside your UCAT account; UCAT delivers in more than 130 countries but publishes no city list. Register in May and book the day booking opens in June. Online proctored delivery is only offered where travel is genuinely impractical.

Entry Requirements: A Levels, the IB and International Qualifications

The standard offer is AAA at A Level including Biology and Chemistry (Birmingham, Cardiff, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Queen’s Belfast, Sheffield), with A*AA at King’s, Queen Mary and Dundee, and AAA including Chemistry plus one other science at Bristol. IB requirements range from 32 points at Birmingham to 38 at King’s, with 36 the most common figure and 6, 6, 6 at Higher Level including Biology and Chemistry.

International qualifications are assessed school by school. Leeds publishes the clearest country-specific requirements:

Plymouth assesses overseas qualifications through UK ENIC and asks you to contact admissions before applying; Liverpool states that the onus is on the applicant to demonstrate equivalence. We could not verify published statements for the HKDSE, Singapore A Levels, Malaysian STPM or WASSCE at any dental school, so treat those as questions for each admissions office. Cambridge International A Levels and the IB are accepted everywhere.

English Language Requirements for Dentistry

Dental schools set high English thresholds, and they vary, so quote the school:

Applicants from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the other countries on the Home Office majority-English list do not need a test for the visa, but a dental school may still ask for evidence if your schooling was not in English. Everyone else should sit IELTS Academic early enough to resit.

International Fees for a UK Dental Degree

Verified international fees for 2026/27 or 2027 entry, as published by each school:

Plan on £38,000 to £61,000 a year for five years, with clinical years costing more where a school splits its fee. King’s, Cardiff, Birmingham and Sheffield had not published a verifiable 2027 figure when we checked, so ask them directly.

Fee status and the Student visa

Fee status is set by government regulations and assessed by each university: you must fit every requirement of one home category, which for most people means settled status in the UK and three years of ordinary residence before the course starts. EU students lost automatic home status for courses starting from August 2021. If you fit no home category you pay international fees and need a Student visa.

Visa maintenance: first-year fees plus £1,529 a month for courses in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to nine months, held for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of your application
Immigration Health Surcharge £776 a year for students, paid up front for the length of the visa
Visa application fee £558 from outside the UK; apply up to six months before the course starts

Work Experience for International Dentistry Applicants

The Dental Schools Council standard wording is that applicants should ideally have experience working, volunteering or observing in healthcare environments, particularly general dental practice. Schools differ on how hard that requirement is:

Birmingham suggests ideally three days or more in an NHS or mixed practice; Newcastle asks for a minimum of ten days of relevant work experience
Cardiff and Portsmouth say it is desirable but not a specific requirement; Leeds says clinical experience is not required; Plymouth does not consider personal statements or work experience when selecting for interview
King’s accepts public-facing work such as pharmacy, retail or restaurant work where clinical observation is impossible, and Glasgow points applicants to an online MOOC

How to Apply Through UCAS from Overseas

The deadline for dentistry is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, the same as medicine
Applications for 2027 entry could be submitted from 1 September 2026
A maximum of four of your five choices can be dentistry; the fifth may be a different subject
A 2026 UCAT result is valid only for the 2027 cycle, or deferred 2028 entry

Dental School Interviews: Online Options for International Applicants

For 2027 entry the Dental Schools Council guide and the schools themselves report:

Online for everyone: Bristol (structured interview), Glasgow (online MMI), Newcastle (online panel over Zoom), Plymouth (online MMI), Queen Mary (online panel, January to February)
Online for overseas applicants: Manchester (Zoom for applicants domiciled overseas), Dundee (in-person MMIs held online for international applicants), Portsmouth (online or on campus)
In person only: Sheffield, which does not offer online selection days
Format: MMI at Birmingham, Cardiff, Dundee, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Plymouth, Queen’s Belfast and Aberdeen; panel at Newcastle, Portsmouth, Queen Mary and Sheffield; King’s and Leeds were still confirming their format when we checked

After Graduation: GDC Registration and Dental Foundation Training

A UK BDS from a GDC-approved provider leads to GDC registration without any further examination: you apply as a UK-qualified dentist, pay a small application fee, and the GDC aims to assess complete applications within 15 working days.

Dental Foundation Training, the year most new graduates complete before working in NHS general practice, is open to international graduates of UK dental schools with conditions. The 2027 person specification requires full GDC registration by the start of the post and eligibility to work in the UK. NHS England states that it contacts all UK dental schools to verify the eligibility of international students to apply, and that it holds the sponsor licence to sponsor Skilled Worker visas for foundation training. Whether a Graduate visa alone is sufficient is not stated, so raise it with your dental school in your final year.

Is a UK Dental Degree Recognised in Canada, the USA and Elsewhere?

This is where a UK BDS differs from a UK medical degree, and international applicants need to know it before they apply.

Canada

The Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada’s reciprocal recognition covers accredited programmes in the USA, Australia (from 2010), New Zealand (from 2011) and Ireland (from 2012). The UK is not on that list, so a UK BDS is a non-accredited qualification in Canada. Graduates use the NDEB Equivalency Process, the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge, the Assessment of Clinical Judgement and the NDECC clinical examination, before applying for a provincial licence. It is a well-trodden route, but it is a route, not automatic recognition.

USA

A UK BDS is not accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, so graduates apply to advanced-standing programmes for international dentists and must pass the Integrated National Board Dental Examination. In most states an advanced programme alone does not satisfy licensure unless a DDS or DMD is earned.

Australia

UK dental qualifications from an approved university are treated as equivalent to Australian ones, and graduates of the listed UK providers are not required to complete the Australian Dental Council assessment process.

Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Nigeria and Malaysia

Singapore: the Singapore Dental Council’s revised schedule of recognised schools, which includes 12 UK schools, takes effect on 1 January 2029, and graduates from then must pass a Qualifying Examination; students graduating by 31 December 2028 use the current conditional registration system. Which UK schools are listed should be checked with the SDC
Hong Kong: non-locally trained dentists sit the Dental Council’s Licensing Examination; there is no list of approved overseas qualifications
India: Indian citizens, PIO and OCI holders with a foreign primary dental qualification must pass the Dental Council of India screening test before state registration
Nigeria: foreign-trained dental graduates sit the MDCN assessment examination
Malaysia: the recognised list under the Dental Act 2018 could not be verified when we checked; confirm with the Malaysian Dental Council

Regulator rules change; check the official body in the country where you plan to practise before you commit five years and a large sum to the degree.

Applying for UK Dentistry from Overseas: A Timeline for 2027 Entry

The year before you apply

Shortlist the schools that actually admit international students and get your qualification equivalence in writing
Arrange dental shadowing or public-facing work and keep a reflective record

Yes, but places are extremely limited. Birmingham offers up to 3 international places, Liverpool up to 4, Manchester 4, Queen Mary up to 4 and Plymouth 2, while King’s made around 15 overseas offers last cycle. Portsmouth and the new UEA dental school have more international capacity. Aberdeen cannot consider international applicants and Lancashire has a single graduate-entry international place.

What IELTS score do I need for dentistry in the UK?

Do UK dental schools interview international applicants online?

Most do. Bristol, Glasgow, Newcastle, Plymouth and Queen Mary interview everyone online; Manchester, Dundee and Portsmouth offer online interviews to overseas applicants. Sheffield only runs in-person selection days.

Is dental work experience required for international applicants?

It varies. Newcastle asks for at least ten days and Birmingham suggests three or more, while Cardiff, Portsmouth and Leeds say it is not a specific requirement and Plymouth does not use it for interview selection. King’s accepts public-facing work where clinical observation is impossible. Shadowing a dentist at home and reflecting on it is the safest preparation.

Is it harder to get into dentistry or medicine in the UK as an international student?

Dentistry, on numbers alone. Several dental schools admit only two to four international students a year, and the whole country admits well under a hundred, whereas most medical schools have somewhat larger international quotas. The academic and UCAT requirements are similar; the difference is the size of the door.
