Studying Medicine in the UK from South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Tanzania: A Complete Guide for 2027 Entry
Every year we hear from families in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Nairobi, Accra, Kampala and Dar es Salaam who want a UK medical degree and cannot find a straight answer to the basic questions: does my school qualification count, where do I sit the UCAT, what does it really cost, and can I practise at home afterwards.
This guide answers those questions for South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Tanzania. The five school systems are treated very differently by UK medical schools, so the qualifications section is split by country; the UCAT, UCAS, visa and fee rules are the same for everyone and are covered once.

Which African School Qualifications Do UK Medical Schools Accept?
The single most important thing to establish is whether your school-leaving qualification is accepted for direct entry or treated as a GCSE-level qualification that needs A Levels, the IB or a foundation year on top. The answer depends on the country.
South Africa: National Senior Certificate (NSC) and IEB
The NSC is accepted for direct entry to medicine by some UK medical schools, with high grades, and not by others. Verified published requirements:

So a strong Matric with level 7s in Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Mathematics opens a real shortlist, but not every school. Build your four choices from schools that publish an NSC requirement, and email the others before you use a choice on them.
Kenya: KCSE
The KCSE is not accepted for direct entry. Manchester states that applicants who have completed the KCSE need a University-recognised foundation programme before joining an undergraduate course, and Edinburgh says KCSE holders are usually required to complete a foundation year. Brunel lists Kenya as accepting only a diploma or the first year of a degree. Kenyan applicants therefore need A Levels, the IB or one of the foundation routes below.
Ghana: WASSCE
The WASSCE is treated as a GCSE-level qualification. Manchester and Edinburgh both direct SSCE holders to a foundation programme, and Queen Mary lists the WASSCE for foundation entry only, with A Levels or the IB required for direct entry. This is the same position as for Nigerian WAEC candidates.
Uganda: UACE
Edinburgh states, university-wide, that UACE Principal Level subjects are considered on a grade-for-grade basis with GCE A Levels. Whether individual medical schools apply that to medicine is not published, and we could not verify a medical school that names UACE grades for its MBChB. Treat UACE as a case to put to each admissions office directly, with your Principal passes in Chemistry and Biology to hand.
Tanzania: ACSEE
Edinburgh states that a Division 1 pass in the ACSEE will often be considered for direct entry to the university, and other universities equate the ACSEE to A Levels for general courses. As with UACE, no medical school publishes an ACSEE requirement for medicine, so confirm in writing before you apply.
The universal routes: A Levels and the IB
Cambridge International A Levels, offered at international schools across all five countries, are accepted everywhere; Cambridge itself states that international A Levels from Cambridge International, Oxford AQA or Pearson Edexcel are comparable to UK A Levels. Typical medicine offers are AAA including Chemistry and Biology, A*AA at the most selective schools. The IB Diploma is also accepted everywhere; St Andrews, for example, asks for 38 points with 6, 6, 6 at Higher Level including Chemistry. Foundation Routes That Genuinely Lead to Medicine
Most UK foundation years do not lead to medicine, and Gateway Year (A104) courses are for UK home students only; Keele states outright that international applicants are not eligible. The routes that are open to international students and do progress to medicine:
- University of Lancashire (formerly UCLan), Medicine and Surgery with Foundation Year (UCAS A101): six years, open to international students only, no UCAT, entry A Level ABB in two sciences including Chemistry or the IB, IELTS 6.5. Foundation year £31,500 then £49,950 a year. Progression needs a 70 percent average across science and maths modules
- University of Bristol, International Foundation Programme for Medicine: for overseas students with strong sciences at Year 12 level, IELTS 7.0, £28,000. Every student is guaranteed an MMI but progression to the MB ChB is not guaranteed and you still apply through UCAS
- University of St Andrews, Medical Sciences International Pre-Med: nine months, sciences including Chemistry in your final school year, IELTS 7.0 in all components. Progression to the medicine degree requires module grades, a competitive UCAT score and a satisfactory MMI, and is not automatic
None of these routes publishes a statement that it admits KCSE or WASSCE holders without A Levels. Ask each admissions office in writing before you build a plan on it. Manchester’s International Foundation for medicine is restricted to government-sponsored students from Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

UCAT in South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Tanzania
Nearly every standard-entry medicine course in the UK requires the UCAT, and African candidates sit the same test as UK candidates at Pearson VUE centres. It is the UCAT, not the UCAT ANZ.

UCAT states that the test is delivered in more than 130 countries but does not publish a country or city list, and the Pearson VUE locator is only visible inside your UCAT account. Centres have historically been available in South Africa, Kenya and Ghana; Pearson VUE opened a Pearson Professional Center in Westlands, Nairobi, in 2024 for high-stakes professional examinations. Availability in Uganda and Tanzania should be checked at booking rather than assumed, and Dundee, for one, will consider exempting applicants who are certified as having no test centre in their country.
Online proctored delivery is only offered where travel is genuinely impractical because of distance, war, civil unrest or natural disaster. Register in May, open the locator and book the first suitable slot the moment booking opens in June; international centres fill within days.
Since 2025 the test has three scored subtests, Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning, each 300 to 900 for a total out of 2700, plus a Situational Judgement Test reported as Band 1 to Band 4. The 2025 mean total was 1891. Because international places are a small fixed quota, scores above 2500 are highly competitive at the most selective schools and many successful international applicants sit between 2300 and 2500.

English Language Requirements
None of the five countries is on the Home Office list of majority English-speaking countries for visa purposes, so you will need to evidence English. The good news is that several medical schools accept school English grades in place of IELTS. Glasgow Medicine publishes the clearest list:

Edinburgh MBChB accepts level 6 in NSC English as a First or Home Language but does not list First Additional Language. Where a school publishes only IELTS, expect 7.0 in every component (Keele, Brunel) or higher (Edinburgh asks for 7.5 in each component). University-wide English equivalences at Sheffield, Manchester and Plymouth accept KCSE, WASSCE and UCE English grades for general courses, but medicine is often stricter, so check the medical school page rather than the university page.

How to Apply Through UCAS
- The deadline for medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time: 19:00 in South Africa, 20:00 in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and 17:00 in Ghana
- Applications for 2027 entry could be submitted from 1 September 2026
- A maximum of four of your five choices can be medicine
- You need predicted grades from your school, a teacher reference and a personal statement written to the UCAS structure

What It Costs: Fees, Visa Money and the TB Test
Verified international tuition fees for 2026/27. Figures for 2027 entry are published later and are usually slightly higher:

Plan on £40,000 to £60,000 a year in fees, for five years at most schools and six at Edinburgh, Oxford and Cambridge. In rand, shillings or cedis that is a very large sum, and because the fee is fixed in pounds, currency movement over five years is a real risk; budget with a buffer.
- Student visa maintenance: first-year fees plus £1,529 a month for courses in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to nine months, held for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of your application
- Visa application fee £558 from outside the UK; you can apply up to six months before the course starts
- Immigration Health Surcharge £776 a year for students, paid up front
- A tuberculosis test from a Home Office approved clinic is required for visas of more than six months: South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Tanzania are all on the list
- ATAS clearance is not required for an undergraduate MBBS

Scholarships
Be realistic. Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships fund postgraduate study, not an undergraduate medical degree, and the large university-wide international scholarships usually exclude medicine. One verified exception: the University of Lancashire’s MBBS Excellence Scholarship gives £10,000 (£2,000 a year) to the ten strongest international performers at its MMI. Treat any award as a bonus, never as the plan.

How Competitive Is It?
Intakes at English medical schools are capped and the Office for Students states that recent increases can only be used to recruit home students, so international places are a small fixed quota. Sheffield publishes 273 home places and 18 international places for its five-year course, and Edinburgh has reported roughly 2,830 applications for around 21 overseas places. The often-quoted figure of around 7.5 percent of places comes from older Department of Health guidance that we have not been able to verify on a current official page.
That is why the UCAT, the personal statement and the interview all have to be strong, and why your four choices should be built around your score and your qualification rather than a league table. Our UK medical schools ranking hub and medicine application tutor service exist for that decision.
Interviews: Online for International Applicants
Birmingham interviews international applicants online via Zoom regardless of where they are based. Sheffield invites international applicants to an online panel interview between December and January. Brunel runs a virtual MMI of six online stations. Cardiff has indicated online interviews for overseas applicants. Check each of your four schools, because a few still prefer in-person interviews.

Practising at Home After a UK Degree: HPCSA, KMPDC, MDC, UMDPC and MCT
A UK medical degree is respected across the continent, but none of the five regulators registers foreign-trained graduates automatically. Each has an examination and internship process, and we found no exemption for UK graduates at any of them.
South Africa: HPCSA
The HPCSA states that foreign-qualified applicants are not entitled to automatic registration until their competence has been ascertained through theory and practical examinations, currently administered by the University of KwaZulu-Natal under a contract that began in September 2023. UCT describes the examination as being set at the exit level of the final South African medical examination, with an ethics and medico-legal assessment. Internship and community service requirements apply afterwards; confirm the current rules with the HPCSA directly.
Kenya: KMPDC
Foreign-trained graduates holding a degree recognised by the Council sit the Internship Qualifying Examination, a written and oral examination with a pass mark of 50 percent overall and 50 percent in the clinical components, with a maximum of three attempts. A mandatory four-month attachment precedes the examination, and ECFMG verification of your degree is required. Graduates of East African Community institutions are exempt under reciprocal recognition; a UK graduate is not.
Ghana: Medical and Dental Council
Candidates must have trained at an institution recognised by the Council, and foreign-trained candidates must complete a mandatory clinical rotation of at least six months before they are eligible to sit the Council’s licensing examination. A fifth failure bars further attempts.
Uganda: UMDPC
All applicants sit the Council’s pre-registration Medical Licensing Examinations, written and clinical, held twice a year in February and May, with a maximum of four attempts. The written papers are multiple-choice by discipline and the clinical examination covers Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with a 50 percent pass mark in each. An NCHE equating letter for your degree is required.
Tanzania: Medical Council of Tanganyika
Pre-internship examinations must be passed before provisional registration and the one-year internship, and graduates trained outside Tanzania need a Tanzania Commission for Universities evaluation certificate first.
Regulator rules change; check the official website of the council concerned before you rely on any of this. In every case, budget time and money for the examination on top of the degree.
Can I Stay and Work in the UK After Graduating?
Yes, and the position for international graduates of UK medical schools improved in 2026. The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, which received Royal Assent on 5 March 2026, defines a UK medical graduate as the holder of a UK primary medical qualification, excluding only those who spent all or most of their training outside the British Islands. An international student who completes the whole degree at a UK medical school is therefore in the prioritised group for Foundation Programme places, and NHS England has confirmed that from 2027 the prioritisation applies at both shortlisting and offer.
- Foundation Programme: you apply through your medical school in the same way as home students. You must declare your visa status on the application, and visa sponsorship is arranged after allocation
- Graduate visa: two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 onwards. Anyone starting in 2027 will graduate under the 18-month rule, so plan on the shorter period
- Health and Care Worker visa: doctors are eligible, there is no Immigration Health Surcharge on this route, and the application fee is £324 for up to three years or £628 for longer
Immigration rules change frequently. Treat this as the position on 7 September 2026 and confirm on GOV.UK before you rely on it.
Applying to the UK from Africa: A Timeline for 2027 Entry
The year before you apply
- Confirm your route: NSC with level 7s for the schools that accept it, Cambridge International A Levels or the IB for everyone, or one of the foundation routes above
- Get each medical school’s position on your qualification in writing
- Arrange clinical work experience or volunteering and keep a reflective record
- Sit IELTS Academic early if your school English grade will not be accepted
- Begin UCAT preparation at least three months before your test date

- Register for the UCAT in May and book the day booking opens in June
- Sit the UCAT in July or August
- Draft your personal statement
September and October
- Choose four schools around your UCAT score, your qualification and your budget
- Submit UCAS before 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time
- Book your TB test and start assembling the 28-day bank evidence
November to March
- UCAT results reach universities in early November
- Interview invitations follow; most are online for international applicants
- Offers arrive, conditional on final grades and English

Frequently asked questions
Is the South African NSC (Matric) accepted for medicine in the UK?
By some medical schools, with high grades. Edinburgh asks for four subjects at level 7 including Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Mathematics plus level 6 in English; St Andrews for an 80 percent average with level 7 in at least five subjects including those three; Brunel for 7, 7, 6, 6, 6. Queen Mary does not accept the NSC for its MBBS. Check each school and build your choices around those that publish an NSC requirement.
Can I study medicine in the UK with KCSE?
Not directly. Manchester and Edinburgh both require KCSE holders to complete a foundation programme first, and no medical school we could verify accepts the KCSE for direct entry to medicine. Kenyan applicants need Cambridge International A Levels, the IB, or an international foundation route that leads to medicine.
Is WASSCE accepted for medicine in the UK for Ghanaian students?
No. The WASSCE is treated as a GCSE-level qualification; Manchester, Edinburgh and Queen Mary all direct WASSCE holders to a foundation programme, and direct entry needs A Levels or the IB. The position is the same as for Nigerian WAEC candidates.
Is the Ugandan UACE accepted for medicine in the UK?
Edinburgh considers UACE Principal Level subjects grade for grade with A Levels at university level, but no UK medical school publishes UACE grades for medicine specifically. Ask each admissions office in writing with your Principal passes in Chemistry and Biology before you apply.
Is the Tanzanian ACSEE accepted for medicine in the UK?
Edinburgh will often consider a Division 1 ACSEE for direct entry to the university and other universities equate it to A Levels, but no medical school publishes an ACSEE requirement for medicine. Confirm in writing with each school.
Where can I sit the UCAT in Africa?
At Pearson VUE test centres found through the locator inside your UCAT account. UCAT does not publish a country list; centres have historically been available in South Africa, Kenya and Ghana, and Pearson VUE opened a professional testing centre in Nairobi in 2024. Check availability in Uganda and Tanzania at booking. Register in May and book the moment booking opens on 23 June. The fee outside the UK is £115.
What if there is no UCAT test centre in my country?

Verified 2026/27 international fees range from £39,900 a year in the pre-clinical years at Manchester (£60,900 in the clinical years) to £54,650 at Edinburgh, with Brunel at £49,395 and Lancashire at £49,950. Plan on £40,000 to £60,000 a year for five or six years, plus living costs, visa money and the Immigration Health Surcharge.
What money do I need to show for the UK Student visa?

Can I practise in South Africa after a UK medical degree?
Yes, after the HPCSA process. Foreign-qualified doctors are not registered automatically; they must pass the HPCSA board examination, currently administered by the University of KwaZulu-Natal at the exit level of the South African final medical examination, then complete the internship and community service requirements. We found no exemption for UK graduates.
Can I practise in Kenya after a UK medical degree?
Yes, after the KMPDC Internship Qualifying Examination, which requires a four-month attachment first, ECFMG verification of your degree, a 50 percent pass in the written and clinical components and allows three attempts. Only graduates of East African Community institutions are exempt.
Can I practise in Ghana, Uganda or Tanzania after a UK medical degree?
Yes, after each council’s examination. Ghana’s Medical and Dental Council requires a six-month clinical rotation before its licensing examination; Uganda’s UMDPC sets written and clinical pre-registration examinations twice a year with four attempts allowed; Tanzania’s Medical Council requires a TCU evaluation certificate and pre-internship examinations before provisional registration and internship.
Can I stay and work in the UK after graduating?
Yes. Under the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, graduates of UK medical schools are prioritised for Foundation Programme places regardless of nationality or immigration status. The Graduate visa is 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027, and doctors can move to the Health and Care Worker visa, which has no Immigration Health Surcharge.
When is the UCAS deadline for medicine for 2027 entry?
15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time: 19:00 in South Africa, 20:00 in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, and 17:00 in Ghana. Medical schools rarely consider late applications.
