Studying Medicine in the UK from Thailand: A Complete Guide for 2027 Entry

Dr Akash GandhiDr Akash Gandhi·NHS GP and Medicine Admissions ExpertUpdated 18 September 2026

Every year a group of Thai students, most of them at international schools in Bangkok, set their sights on a UK medical degree. The information they find is often patchy: that Mathayom 6 is enough, that TCAS scores carry across, or that a UK degree lets you walk back into practice in Thailand. None of those is true, and the last one matters most.

This guide sets out what UK medical schools actually accept from Thai applicants, where you sit the UCAT in Thailand, what the fees look like in baht, what the Medical Council of Thailand requires before you leave if you might ever want to practise at home, and how the timeline works for 2027 entry.

At TheUKCATPeople we have supported international applicants to UK medical schools since 2012. Our Ultimate Package combines one-to-one mentoring with a UK doctor, UCAT tutoring, personal statement editing and interview coaching, all delivered online and scheduled around Thai time.

Wat Arun and a longtail boat on the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok: studying medicine in the UK from Thailand, UCAT test centres in Thailand and UK medical school entry requirements for M6, A Level and IB students

Can You Get Into UK Medicine with Mathayom 6 (M6)?

No. The Thai Certificate of Secondary Education (Mathayom 6, often written M6 or Maw 6) is not accepted on its own for direct entry to medicine at UK medical schools. It is treated as a school-leaving certificate that sits below A Level standard for competitive courses.

The published positions of UK universities make this clear:

  • The University of Manchester states that applicants with Mathayom 6 must take a foundation year, because the qualification does not meet its minimum entry requirements for any undergraduate course. Its medicine course asks international applicants to confirm country-specific requirements with the medicine admissions team
  • Birmingham Medical School publishes the international school-leaving qualifications it accepts for its five-year medicine course, including the IB, Malaysian STPM, Singapore diplomas and Indian boards. No Thai qualification appears on that list
  • Queen Mary University of London considers Mathayom 6 for entry to its foundation courses, with A Levels or the IB required for direct undergraduate entry
  • Southampton asks for M6 with a GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 for its foundation years, not for direct entry

TCAS scores play no part in a UCAS application. TGAT, TPAT (including the TPAT1 medical aptitude test used by Thai medical schools) and O-NET results are Thai admissions tools; UK medical schools use the UCAT, your A Level or IB grades, your personal statement, your reference and an interview.

Thailand’s own TCAS subject tests are called "A-Level" (Applied Knowledge Level). They are not UK A Levels and are not accepted as UK A Levels by any medical school. When a UK university asks for A Levels, it means Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel or another UK-regulated or international A Level.

Routes Into UK Medicine for Thai Students

There are four realistic routes, and the first two account for almost every successful Thai applicant.

Route 1: A Levels at a British-curriculum international school

Most Thai applicants to UK medicine take A Levels (Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel International) at a British-curriculum school. Typical medicine offers are AAA including Chemistry and Biology, with the most selective schools asking for A*AA. Verified examples for the current cycle:

Medical school

A Level offer

Imperial College London

A*AA including Chemistry and Biology

University of Sheffield

AAA including Chemistry or Biology plus a second science

University of Liverpool

AAA including Chemistry plus Biology, Physics or Maths

University of Manchester

AAA including Biology or Chemistry plus a second science

University of Buckingham (private, 4.5 years)

ABB including Chemistry or Biology

Not every medical school states outright that international A Levels are treated identically to UK A Levels, and some ask you to email admissions to confirm. Check with each of your four choices before you commit a UCAS choice to it.

Route 2: The IB Diploma

Many of the larger international schools in Bangkok offer the IB Diploma. Medical schools typically ask for 36 to 38 points with 6, 6, 6 at Higher Level including Chemistry and Biology. Our IB requirements for medicine guide lists the requirement at every UK medical school.

Route 3: A foundation year that genuinely leads to medicine

This is the route most relevant to students finishing M6 at a Thai school. Be careful: most UK foundation years do not lead to medicine, and Gateway Year (A104) courses are widening-participation routes for UK home students only. The routes open to international students that do progress to medicine are few:

  • University of Bristol, International Foundation Programme for Medicine: designed for overseas students who have completed Year 12 with strong sciences. IELTS 7.0. Every student is guaranteed an MMI interview, but progression to the MB ChB is not guaranteed and you still apply through UCAS
  • University of Sussex International Study Centre, Foundation Year in Medicine (progressing to Brighton and Sussex Medical School): 75 percent in all academic modules and 70 percent in English, the UCAT Situational Judgement Test, and a guaranteed interview
  • University of Buckingham: a one-year CertHE Pre-Medical programme with 70 percent required for direct progression to its 4.5-year MB ChB
  • University of Lancashire (formerly UCLan), Medicine and Surgery with Foundation Year (UCAS A101): a six-year MBBS for international students only. Entry is A Level ABB in two sciences including Chemistry, or the IB, with IELTS 6.5, so it suits students with A Levels below AAA rather than students with M6 alone

Whether a particular foundation route will admit an M6 holder, and at what GPA, is not always stated on the published page. Ask each admissions office in writing before you plan around it.

Route 4: Graduate entry after a first degree

Some Thai students complete a science degree first, in Thailand or abroad, and then apply for a four-year graduate-entry course. Many graduate-entry courses are restricted to home students, so check each school carefully. Our graduate entry medicine overview explains how the route works, our UK foundation medicine courses guide covers every foundation and gateway route, and our UK medical school entry requirements guide lists standard offers school by school.

International Schools in Thailand: What to Check Early

Thailand has a large international school sector. The International Schools Association of Thailand represents around 200 member schools, offering British, American and IB curricula among others, with the heaviest concentration in Bangkok and further schools in Chiang Mai, Phuket and the Eastern Seaboard. The curriculum your school offers decides your route, so check these points before Year 12 (Mathayom 5 age):

  • British-curriculum schools: confirm the school offers A Level Chemistry and Biology, ideally with Maths or Physics as the third subject, and that it issues predicted grades and UCAS references routinely
  • IB schools: take Chemistry and Biology at Higher Level; Standard Level Chemistry closes many medical schools to you
  • American-curriculum schools: a US high school diploma alone is rarely enough for UK medicine. Some schools accept it with strong AP scores, but requirements vary widely, so check each school before relying on this route
  • Thai bilingual or English programme schools that finish at M6: plan for a foundation route, or for A Levels as a private candidate, which is possible but makes predicted grades and a UCAS reference harder to arrange

If your school has never sent a student to UK medicine, ask early how it handles UCAS references and predicted grades. Our medicine application tutor service often works alongside school counsellors who are new to UK medicine.

UCAT in Thailand: Test Centres, Dates and Fees

The UCAT is the admissions test for nearly every standard-entry medicine course in the UK, and Thai candidates sit exactly the same test as UK candidates. You sit the UCAT, not the UCAT ANZ, and you must not sit both in the same year.

The same UCAT also counts in Thailand: Thammasat University uses it for its MD (International Program) at CICM, its MD (English Program) and its DDS (Bilingual Program), so one sitting can serve a UK and a Thammasat application in the same cycle. Our list of universities that accept the UCAT outside the UK has the details and sources.

Where can I sit the UCAT in Thailand?

The UCAT is delivered at Pearson VUE test centres. When we searched the UCAT test centre locator in September 2026, it listed several centres in Bangkok (including the Pearson Professional Center on Sukhumvit 21), centres at university campuses in Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan and Chon Buri, two centres in Chiang Mai, and further centres in Khon Kaen, Phuket and Ranong. Students in the far south may find a centre in Penang in Malaysia closer than one in Thailand.

Not every centre offers UCAT slots on every date, and the list changes, so check the locator inside your UCAT account as soon as you have registered and book the first suitable slot. Online proctored delivery (OnVUE) is only offered where travel to a centre is genuinely impractical, so plan on sitting in person.

Reading this in late September 2026? The 2026 booking deadline has passed and testing closes on 24 September, so if you have not already booked, you cannot apply for 2027 entry. Aim for 2028 entry instead: the 2027 UCAT cycle is expected to follow the same shape, with registration in May, booking in June and testing from July to late September 2027, and the UCAS deadline for 2028 entry will again be mid-October. Use the extra year to secure your subjects, IELTS and work experience.

The UCAT bursary is only open to UK candidates, so budget for the full international fee.

What is in the test?

Since 2025 the UCAT has three scored cognitive subtests, Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning, each scaled from 300 to 900 for a total out of 2700, plus a Situational Judgement Test reported as Band 1 (highest) to Band 4. Abstract Reasoning was withdrawn in 2025. There is no negative marking.

Thailand is six hours ahead of the UK in summer and seven in winter, so an evening lesson in Bangkok is early afternoon in the UK. All our UCAT tutors are UK doctors or top-decile medical students, and lessons are online. Start with the free UCAT Guides hub, practise under timed conditions on the UCAT online trainer, and see the UCAT registration guide for the booking process step by step.

What UCAT Score Do Thai Applicants Need?

The 2026 mean total score was 1918 (Verbal Reasoning 602, Decision Making 640, Quantitative Reasoning 675), and the Situational Judgement Test bands were distributed 15 percent Band 1, 40 percent Band 2, 34 percent Band 3 and 11 percent Band 4.

Because international places are a small, fixed fraction of each medical school intake, international applicants usually compete against each other for a handful of places, and a strong UCAT matters more, not less. As a rule of thumb, scores above 2500 are highly competitive at the most selective schools and many strong international applicants sit between 2300 and 2500. Verbal Reasoning is often the weakest subtest for students whose first language is Thai, so start it early. Several schools also use the SJT as a hard filter, so a Band 4 can rule you out regardless of your total.

Use our UCAT cut-off scores guide to see how each university uses the UCAT, the UCAT score calculator to convert your practice scores, and the UCAT scores and scoring guide for deciles and percentiles.

English Language Requirements for Thai Applicants

Thailand is not on the UK Home Office list of majority English-speaking countries, so you will normally need to prove your English for both the university and the Student visa. The visa requirement is CEFR level B2, and a university that is a licensed Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself rather than requiring a separate Secure English Language Test.

Medical schools set their own, higher, thresholds and they vary, so quote the school, never a single "medicine IELTS":

Medical school

IELTS Academic requirement

University of Sheffield

7.5 overall, minimum 7.0 in each component

University of Birmingham

7.0 overall, minimum 7.0 in each band

University of Liverpool

7.0 overall, no component below 7.0

University of Manchester

7.0 overall, minimum 6.5, or IGCSE English First Language grade B or Second Language grade A

University of Buckingham

7.0 overall, minimum 6.5

Students at British-curriculum schools often hold IGCSE English, but Manchester is the only medical school we have verified that publishes an IGCSE equivalent for its MBChB. Unless a medical school says otherwise, plan to sit IELTS Academic, which is widely available in Bangkok and other Thai cities. Our IELTS requirements for UK medical schools guide lists every school.

How to Apply Through UCAS from Thailand

All applications to UK medical schools go through UCAS, exactly as they do for UK students. The key facts for 2027 entry:

  • The deadline for medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, which is midnight in Thailand as 15 October ends. Treat 15 October Thai time as your real deadline
  • Applications for 2027 entry opened on 12 May 2026 and could be submitted from 1 September 2026
  • You can use a maximum of four of your five choices for medicine. The fifth can be another subject, and many international applicants use it for biomedical science as an insurance option
  • You need predicted A Level or IB grades from your school, a reference from a teacher, and a personal statement

For the personal statement, read our ultimate medicine personal statement guide and successful medicine personal statement examples, then have a UK doctor review your draft through our medicine personal statement review service. The UCAS medicine application guide and timeline walks through the whole form.

Work experience in Thailand is usually arranged through family contacts, private hospitals or volunteering, and medical schools are realistic about what international applicants can access. Shadowing, volunteering in a care or community setting, and honest reflection on what you saw all count. Our medicine work experience guide and Work Experience Finder can help.

What It Costs in Baht: Fees, Visa Money and the Exchange Rate

A UK medical degree for an international student is a five or six-year investment, and the fee is fixed in pounds while your family’s budget is in baht. The conversions below use £1 = about 44.5 baht (the European Central Bank reference rate on 17 September 2026) and are rounded. Check the live rate when you plan and budget with a buffer.

Verified international tuition fees for the 2026/27 academic year (2027 figures are published later in the cycle and are usually a little higher):

Medical school

International fee per year

Approximate baht

University of Manchester

£39,900 in years 1 and 2, £60,900 in the clinical years (may rise up to 7 percent a year)

1.8 million, then 2.7 million

University of Buckingham

From £47,000 (4.5-year course)

2.1 million

University of Lancashire

£49,950 (foundation year £31,500)

2.2 million (foundation year 1.4 million)

University of Liverpool

£50,000

2.2 million

Imperial College London

£58,600

2.6 million

Other money you must plan for:

  • Student visa maintenance: you must show your first-year fees plus £1,529 a month for courses in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to nine months (roughly 610,000 baht in London or 470,000 baht elsewhere), held in the bank for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of your application
  • The Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 a year for students (about 34,500 baht), paid up front for the length of the visa
  • The Student visa application fee from outside the UK is £558 (about 24,800 baht), and you can apply up to six months before the course starts
  • Thailand is on the list of countries whose residents need a tuberculosis test from a Home Office approved clinic before applying for a UK visa of more than six months
  • ATAS clearance is not required for an undergraduate MBBS

See our school-by-school breakdown of UK medical school fees for international students to compare total course cost, not just the first year.

Scholarships: be realistic

Thailand’s best-known undergraduate awards for study abroad, the King’s Scholarship and the Thai government scholarships run through the Office of the Civil Service Commission (OCSC), send a small number of school leavers overseas each year. The fields each award covers, and any obligation to work for a Thai government agency afterwards, are set in that year’s OCSC announcement. We could not confirm that any current award funds an undergraduate medical degree in the UK, so read the announcement for your year directly and do not build your plan around it.

On the UK side, Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships are for postgraduate study only, and Imperial’s medicine scholarships are restricted to home students. A few medical schools advertise small awards for international students, typically a few thousand pounds off the first year or two. Treat any scholarship as a bonus, never as the plan.

How Competitive Is It for Thai Applicants?

Medical school intakes in England are capped by the government, and the Office for Students is explicit that recent increases can only be used to recruit home students. Each school has a small quota of international places. Sheffield, for example, publishes 273 home places and 18 international places for its five-year course. The often-quoted figure of around 7.5 percent of places for international students comes from older Department of Health guidance and we have not been able to verify it on a current official page, so treat it as indicative rather than a rule.

The practical consequence is that a Thai applicant needs every element to be strong: AAA or 36+ IB predicted, a UCAT well above the mean, a personal statement grounded in real experience and a confident interview. Choose your four schools around your UCAT score and your English test, not around league tables.

Our UK medical schools ranking hub and medicine application tutor service exist for exactly this decision.

Interviews: Online for International Applicants

Most UK medical schools now interview international applicants online. Sheffield states that international applicants are invited to an online panel interview in January 2027. Brunel runs all of its interviews as an asynchronous virtual MMI of six seven-minute stations. Birmingham interviews international applicants online via Zoom regardless of where they are based. A few schools still prefer in-person interviews, so check each of your four choices. Live online interviews are scheduled in UK time, which can mean an evening slot in Thailand.

Interview formats are covered in our MMI preparation guide and ultimate medicine interview questions guide, and you can practise with a UK doctor through our medicine interview coaching, mock interviews and medicine interview course.

Practising in Thailand After a UK Degree: What the Medical Council Requires

This is the most important section of this guide for any Thai student who might want to practise at home. A UK medical degree does not give you the right to practise in Thailand, and the Medical Council of Thailand (แพทยสภา, TMC) expects you to act before you leave, not after you graduate.

1. Check whether your UK medical school is recognised, before you apply

The TMC only allows graduates of foreign medical schools it has recognised to sit the Thai licensing examination. Its current published lists are short. The Thai-language list dated June 2026 includes no medical school in the UK; the only Barts entry is Queen Mary’s campus in Malta. The English list dated December 2025 names one UK school, the University of Central Lancashire (now the University of Lancashire), with recognition running to January 2026. Several UK schools, including Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Southampton and UCL, appeared on earlier lists, but their recognition periods have expired. Recognition lasts five years at a time.

2. If your school is recognised, register with the TMC within a month of starting

The TMC tells Thai students to file a request to have their course recorded before travelling, or within one month of starting, so their name is on the register of students at a recognised school. A fee applies and rises if you leave it more than a year. If you enrolled while the school was recognised but never registered, and the recognition then lapses, the TMC will not backdate it for you. Once you have registered and graduated from a recognised course, the right to sit the examination stays with you even if the school’s recognition later expires.

3. If your school is not recognised, apply for recognition before you go

You can ask the TMC to consider a school before you enrol. You submit a request form with a fee, the TMC writes to the dean for curriculum information (typically three to four months), and a subcommittee then reviews it (a further one to two months). If the TMC rejects the course, it will not recognise any time you have already studied there. A student who goes to an unrecognised school and asks for recognition afterwards may be ineligible both to work as an intern in Thailand and to sit the licensing examination.

Because no UK school currently appears on the TMC’s June 2026 list, any Thai student who wants to keep the option of practising in Thailand should contact the TMC Training and Examination office (edu@tmc.or.th) before accepting a UK offer, and should allow six months or more for a recognition request.

4. Study the whole course in the UK, face to face

The TMC requires you to study the whole recognised course in the country concerned, apart from electives written into the curriculum, and to do your clinical training at the hospitals the recognised course lists. It does not recognise online learning in place of clinical placements.

5. The Thai licensing examination and internship

  • The examination is run by the TMC’s Center for Medical Competency Assessment and Accreditation (CMA, ศรว.) in three steps: Step 1 basic medical sciences (300 questions in English), Step 2 clinical sciences (300 questions in English), and Step 3 clinical skills, with an OSCE, long case examination and modified essay questions
  • Step 3 is conducted in Thai, so a student who has studied entirely in English will need to rebuild Thai clinical vocabulary
  • If you graduate without a licence to practise from the country where you studied, or any other country, the TMC requires a one-year internship in Thailand at your medical school or a TMC-recognised institution, and internship places can be scarce

UK graduates receive provisional registration with the General Medical Council and full registration after Foundation Year 1. We have not seen the TMC state how it treats GMC provisional or full registration for the internship rule, so ask the TMC directly. Rules and fees change; check tmc.or.th and cmathai.org for the current position before relying on any of this.

Graduates who train in the UK also complete the UK Medical Licensing Assessment as part of their degree, which every UK medical school now builds into finals.

Military Service Deferment for Thai Male Students

Thai male citizens register for military service at 18 and are called to the annual draft at 21. A UK medical degree started at 18 usually runs past your 21st birthday, so plan the deferment early.

  • Students enrolled abroad can apply for deferment, normally with an enrolment letter from the university, your house registration and ID documents, submitted through your local registrar or with help from a Royal Thai Embassy
  • Deferment is for the period of study: after graduation you are expected to attend the next available draft
  • Ask your UK university for an enrolment letter as soon as you enrol each year, and check the current documents and age limits with your district office and the Royal Thai Embassy in London

Can I Stay and Work in the UK After Graduating?

Yes, and the position for international graduates of UK medical schools improved in 2026. The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, which received Royal Assent on 5 March 2026, defines a UK medical graduate as the holder of a UK primary medical qualification, excluding only those who spent all or most of their training outside the British Islands. An international student who completes the whole degree at a UK medical school is therefore in the prioritised group for Foundation Programme places, and NHS England has confirmed that from 2027 the prioritisation applies at both shortlisting and offer.

  • Foundation Programme: you apply through your medical school in the same way as home students. You must declare your visa status on the application, and visa sponsorship is arranged after allocation
  • Graduate visa: two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 onwards. Anyone starting in 2027 will graduate under the 18-month rule, so plan on the shorter period
  • Health and Care Worker visa: doctors are eligible, there is no Immigration Health Surcharge on this route, and the application fee is £324 for up to three years or £628 for longer

Immigration rules change frequently. Treat this as the position on 7 September 2026 and confirm on GOV.UK before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study medicine in the UK with Mathayom 6 (M6)?

Not for direct entry. UK medical schools do not accept M6 on its own for medicine. Manchester requires M6 holders to take a foundation year for any undergraduate course, and no Thai qualification appears on Birmingham’s list of accepted international qualifications for medicine. You need A Levels (typically AAA including Chemistry and Biology) or the IB Diploma, or one of the small number of international foundation routes that lead to medicine.

Do TGAT, TPAT or O-NET scores count for UK medical schools?

No. TCAS scores, including TPAT1, and O-NET results are used by Thai universities and play no part in a UCAS application. UK medical schools use the UCAT, your A Level or IB grades, your personal statement, a teacher reference and an interview. Thailand’s TCAS "A-Level" subject tests are not UK A Levels.

Where can I sit the UCAT in Thailand?

At Pearson VUE test centres, which you book through your UCAT account. In September 2026 the UCAT test centre locator listed several centres in Bangkok, university-campus centres in Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan and Chon Buri, two centres in Chiang Mai, and centres in Khon Kaen, Phuket and Ranong. Availability varies by date, so book as soon as booking opens.

How much does the UCAT cost in Thailand?

The fee for a test taken outside the UK is £115 in 2026, about 5,100 baht, compared with £70 inside the UK. The UCAT bursary is only available to UK candidates.

Is it too late to sit the UCAT for 2027 entry?

If you have not already booked, yes. The 2026 booking deadline was 16 September 2026 and testing closes on 24 September. Aim for 2028 entry instead: the 2027 UCAT cycle is expected to open for registration in May 2027, with testing from July to late September 2027.

How much does it cost a Thai student to study medicine in the UK?

Verified 2026/27 international fees range from £39,900 a year in the pre-clinical years at Manchester (rising to £60,900 in the clinical years) to £58,600 a year at Imperial. At about 44.5 baht to the pound (17 September 2026), that is roughly 1.8 million to 2.7 million baht a year before living costs. You must also show visa maintenance funds of £1,171 a month outside London or £1,529 a month in London, for up to nine months.

Can I practise in Thailand after a UK medical degree?

Only if the Medical Council of Thailand recognises your UK medical school and you pass all three steps of the Thai licensing examination, the last of which is conducted in Thai. The TMC’s June 2026 list includes no UK-based medical school, so contact the TMC before accepting a UK offer if you might want to practise at home, and register your course with the TMC within a month of starting.

Do Thai students need a TB test for the UK Student visa?

Yes. Thailand is on the list of countries whose residents must have a tuberculosis test at a Home Office approved clinic before applying for a UK visa of more than six months.

Can Thai male students defer military service while studying medicine in the UK?

Yes. Students enrolled abroad can apply for deferment with an enrolment letter from their university and their Thai documents, through their local registrar or with help from a Royal Thai Embassy. After graduating you are expected to attend the next available draft, so check the current rules with your district office.

When is the UCAS deadline for medicine for 2027 entry?

15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, which is midnight in Thailand as 15 October ends. Medical schools rarely consider late applications, so aim to have your UCAT sat, IELTS done and personal statement finished well before then.

Sophie
Medicine, King's College London
2025 UCAT2,590 / 2,700
“Harry got my UCAT up to 2,590, working through the sections I kept dropping marks on week by week. Gemma then ran my interview practice so the MMI stations didn't catch me out, and Dr Akash mentored me the whole way through. I'm off to King's for Medicine.”
Ultimate Package
Daniel
Medicine, University College London

“The interview prep was the part that actually moved the needle. Proper mock MMIs, not just lists of questions, and feedback that was honest about what I was getting wrong. I ended up with four offers and firmed UCL.”
Ultimate Package
Aisha
Dentistry, University of Birmingham
Dentistry offers4 offers
“The Ultimate Package kept me organised from UCAT through to interviews. They knew what dental schools actually ask and tightened up my personal statement. Four offers in the end, and I'm going to Birmingham.”
Ultimate Package
Charlotte
Veterinary Medicine, Royal Veterinary College
Vet offers4 offers
“Vet applications come down to the written SAQs as much as the interview. Dr Rebecca went through my SAQs line by line, sharpened my answers and prepped me for the panels. I came away with four offers and chose the RVC.”
