UK Entry Requirements from Australia and New Zealand: ATAR, NCEA and IB

Most UK medical schools publish an offer for Australian and New Zealand qualifications, and the three main routes are treated differently:

• ATAR with a state certificate (HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE, SACE, TCE or ACT): most published medicine offers sit between 96 and 98, with Chemistry and usually Biology studied in Year 12 at a high level. A single "96+" rule of thumb hides real differences, so the table below quotes each school
• NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance: schools that publish an offer ask for Level 3 endorsed with Excellence, or a set number of Excellence credits in Chemistry and one or two other sciences. Not every school accepts NCEA for medicine: Dundee says it is not accepted for its MBChB
• International Baccalaureate: 36 to 42 points overall, with 6, 6, 6 or 7, 6, 6 at Higher Level including Chemistry and Biology; most medicine offers sit at 37 to 39
• Queensland: since students finishing Year 12 in 2020 Queensland has issued an ATAR, not an OP. A few UK schools still print an OP requirement, so ask them for the ATAR they now expect

ATAR and NCEA offers for medicine, school by school

Published requirements for 2027 entry, read from each school’s own international qualifications or course page on 14 October 2026. Where a school publishes no medicine-specific figure it is listed below the table, and you should ask its admissions office in writing.

Read the school’s own page before you choose, using our profiles of Imperial, Leicester, Barts, Edinburgh, King’s, Dundee, St Andrews, UCL, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Oxford and Cambridge. Glasgow’s published ATAR is well below the others, so confirm it with admissions before relying on it, and note that Queen Mary’s Australia country page ties the ATAR to its Malta campus rather than London.

Manchester, Queen’s Belfast, Cardiff, Bristol, Exeter, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle, Nottingham and Southampton published only a general undergraduate figure, or asked applicants to contact medical admissions, when we checked. A general figure such as "ATAR 92" is not the medicine offer, which is always higher. None of the medicine pages we read asks an Australian or New Zealand Year 12 leaver to complete a foundation year or a year at university first.

GCSE-equivalent requirements vary. St Andrews asks for Biology, Mathematics and English at Year 10 High Achievement if they are not taken in Year 12, and wants Year 10 and 11 transcripts; Leicester asks for English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry at the equivalent of a GCSE grade 6; King’s and UCL look for English and Mathematics at the equivalent of grade 6; Birmingham asks for Mathematics at the equivalent of grade 7; Edinburgh asks NCEA students for 14 credits of Level 2 or 3 English and Aberdeen for English to Level 2. Queen Mary does not expect GCSEs from international students.

UCAT (UK) or UCAT ANZ: Which Test to Sit, When and Where

The two tests are identical in content: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning, scaled to a total out of 2700, plus a Situational Judgement Test. They are run on different calendars by two consortia, and the rule that binds them is strict. Sitting both the UCAT and the UCAT ANZ in the same year is listed as misconduct in the UCAT misconduct policy, and all results may be cancelled. So the choice is made once, before you book.

• Applying to UK medical schools only: sit the UCAT (UK). It runs later, from July to late September, which leaves the whole of the Australian winter and Term 3 for preparation
• Applying in Australia or New Zealand as well as the UK: sit the UCAT ANZ. Both consortia say so, because the Australian and New Zealand universities accept only UCAT ANZ results and their deadlines come first. A UCAT ANZ result can then be sent to UK universities through the Results Collection form at ucat.ac.uk, which for UCAT ANZ 2026 results closes on 22 October 2026, a week after the UCAS deadline
• If you sit the UCAT ANZ and use it for the UK, the Situational Judgement score (300 to 900 on the ANZ scale) is converted to a UK band on delivery: 658 and above is Band 1, 596 to 657 Band 2, 502 to 595 Band 3 and below 502 Band 4

Check both official lists before you book: the UK universities that require the UCAT and the Australian and New Zealand universities that require the UCAT ANZ. Which test each medical school uses

Every UK medical school on the UCAT Consortium list uses the UCAT for standard-entry medicine; the BMAT ended after 2023, so there is no second UK test to plan for. In Australia and New Zealand, the undergraduate and school-leaver medicine courses on the UCAT ANZ list use the UCAT ANZ, while graduate-entry medical programmes use the GAMSAT instead, which is not needed for undergraduate medicine in the UK. One change to note for 2028 entry: the University of Auckland has said Casper will replace the UCAT ANZ in its MBChB selection from that intake.

Where can I sit the UCAT (UK) in Australia or New Zealand?

Both tests are delivered at Pearson VUE test centres. When we searched the UCAT (UK) test centre locator on 14 October 2026 it listed centres in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, in several regional cities, and in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch:

• Sydney: Pearson Professional Centre, Level 2, 10 Bridge Street; Lateral Plains, 1 Lorne Avenue, Kensington; Pearson Professional Centre, Level 5, 31 Macquarie Street, Parramatta. Also Newcastle (Mayfield)
• Canberra: Pearson Professional Centre, 4 Marcus Clarke Street
• Melbourne: Pearson Professional Centre, Level 6, 120 Spencer Street; Victoria University, 370 Little Lonsdale Street; Docklands, 1010 Latrobe Street; plus Box Hill, Preston and Ballarat
• Brisbane: Pearson Professional Centre, Level 9, 333 Adelaide Street; Fortitude Valley; plus the Gold Coast and Toowoomba
• Perth: Pearson Professional Centre, Ground Floor, 1 William Street, and two other city centres
• Adelaide: Pearson Professional Centre, Level 6, 55 Grenfell Street, and 29 King William Street
• Auckland: University of Auckland, 67 Symonds Street, and Manukau; also Hamilton
• Wellington: 11 Hunter Street and 89 The Terrace; Christchurch: Ara Institute of Canterbury, Madras Street

Tasmanian candidates had no centre on the list and should plan on Melbourne. Not every centre offers UCAT slots on every date, so check the locator inside your UCAT account once you have registered, and book the day booking opens.

Since 2025 Abstract Reasoning has gone and the three cognitive subtests are scored out of 2700, so ignore any advice built on the old 3600 scale; our post on the 2025 UCAT changes explains what moved. What UCAT Score Do Australian and New Zealand Applicants Need?

In the UK UCAT 2026 the mean total score was 1918 (Verbal Reasoning 602, Decision Making 640, Quantitative Reasoning 675) and the top 10 percent of candidates scored 2250 or above; Situational Judgement bands were 15 percent Band 1, 40 percent Band 2, 34 percent Band 3 and 11 percent Band 4. In the UCAT ANZ 2026 the mean total was 1,964 and the top 10 percent scored 2,340 or more. The two cohorts are different, so compare your score with the cohort you sat with, not with the other test.

International places at each UK medical school are a small fixed quota, so you compete mainly with other international applicants and a strong score matters more, not less. As a rule of thumb, 2300 to 2500 makes you competitive at most UK schools that take international students, and above 2500 is competitive everywhere. Several schools use the Situational Judgement Test as a filter, so a Band 4 can rule you out whatever your total. For comparison at home, Australian school-leaver medicine can demand a very high UCAT ANZ score: Monash interviewed from 2,380, the 94th percentile, for its 2026 intake. That is one reason strong ANZ students add UK schools, which weigh the UCAT alongside grades, the personal statement and interview in different ways.

Applying Through UCAS from Year 12: The Southern-Hemisphere Timing Problem

All applications to UK medical schools go through UCAS, exactly as they do for UK students. The fixed points for 2027 entry:

• The deadline for medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time. That is 04:00 on 16 October in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart, 03:00 in Brisbane, 03:30 in Adelaide, 01:00 in Perth and 06:00 on 16 October in New Zealand. Treat the end of 15 October in your own time zone as your real deadline
• Applications for 2027 entry opened on 12 May 2026 and could be submitted from 1 September 2026
• You can use a maximum of four of your five choices for medicine. The fifth can be another subject, and many international applicants use it for biomedical science as an insurance option
• You need predicted grades, a reference from a teacher, and a personal statement in the three-question UCAS format, 4,000 characters in total

Predicted grades when your final results come after the deadline

Here is the problem every Australian and New Zealand applicant meets. You apply in October of Year 12, before your final exams. NSW and ACT ATARs for the class of 2026 are released on 16 December 2026, and NCEA results come out in mid to late January, so UK medical schools shortlist and interview you on predictions. UCAS asks your referee to predict grades for any exam not yet taken, and says plainly that many international education systems do not normally predict grades. Most Australian and New Zealand schools do not, so ask early. A predicted ATAR, or predicted NCEA Level 3 results with endorsements, from a careers adviser or year coordinator who knows your trial results is what UK admissions tutors expect to see.

Any offer you receive will be conditional on the final ATAR, NCEA or IB result. Universities collect most results themselves through UCAS, but international results often have to be sent by the applicant, so send your ATAR statement or NZQA record of achievement to your firm and insurance choices the day you receive it. The reference itself should come from a teacher who can speak to your academic ability and your suitability for medicine, and it is worth agreeing in August who will write it and what it will cover.

The nine-month gap, and the other way round it

The Australian and New Zealand school year ends in November or December and the UK year starts in late September, so a Year 12 applicant who holds an offer has about nine months to fill. That is not a problem for admissions tutors, who see it as a short gap year. Use it: paid work in a care home or hospital, volunteering, a structured overseas placement, or a semester of science at a local university. Some families prefer the other route, a full gap year: finish Year 12, take your ATAR or NCEA results in hand, sit the UCAT the following winter and apply in October with actual grades, which removes the predicted-grade risk at the cost of a later start.

Work experience is judged on what you learned, not where you did it. GP practices, aged care, disability support, St John Ambulance cadets and hospital volunteer programmes all count, and medical schools are realistic about what overseas applicants can access. What It Costs in Australian and New Zealand Dollars: Fees, Visa Money and Loans

A UK medical degree for an international student is a five or six-year investment, and the fee is fixed in pounds while the family budget is in Australian or New Zealand dollars. The conversions below use £1 = about A$1.90 and NZ$2.36 (the European Central Bank reference rates on 13 October 2026) and are rounded; check the live rate when you plan, and budget with a buffer for a weaker dollar.

Published international tuition fees for the 2026/27 academic year at a sample of UK medical schools (2027/28 fees are published through the autumn and spring and are usually a few percent higher):

Across all UK medical schools the 2026/27 range runs from about £30,150 a year (A$57,200 or NZ$71,100) in the pre-clinical years at the cheapest schools to £70,554 (A$133,900 or NZ$166,500) at Cambridge, with most clinical years between £45,000 and £60,000. Over a five or six-year course that is roughly A$440,000 to A$800,000, or NZ$540,000 to NZ$990,000, in tuition alone. Other money you must plan for:

• Student visa maintenance: first-year fees plus £1,529 a month for courses in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to nine months (about A$26,100 or NZ$32,500 in London, A$20,000 or NZ$24,900 elsewhere), held for 28 consecutive days. Australia and New Zealand are on the Home Office differential evidence list, so you are not asked to submit the bank statements with the application, but the money must exist and can be requested
• The Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 a year for students (about A$1,500 or NZ$1,800 a year), paid up front for the length of the visa
• The Student visa application fee from outside the UK is £558 (about A$1,100 or NZ$1,300), and you can apply up to six months before the course starts
• Living costs of roughly £12,000 to £18,000 a year (A$22,800 to A$34,200, or NZ$28,300 to NZ$42,500) depending on the city, with London at the top of that range

Loans and scholarships

Be realistic about funding. HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP are Australian government loans for study with an Australian approved higher education provider, so they do not cover a degree at a UK university. New Zealand families should not count on a StudyLink student loan for a full overseas degree either; confirm with StudyLink before you plan around one. We know of no Australian or New Zealand government scheme that funds an undergraduate medical degree in the UK. On the UK side, the medicine scholarships universities advertise are almost all for home students, and the few international awards are typically a few thousand pounds off the first year. Treat any scholarship as a bonus, never as the plan.

English Language and the Student Visa for Australian and New Zealand Applicants

Australia and New Zealand are both on the Home Office list of majority English-speaking countries, so as a citizen of either you meet the Student visa’s English requirement by nationality alone. Universities can still set their own English condition: most accept your Year 12 English result, but Liverpool’s published guidelines ask for IELTS even from applicants from English-speaking countries, so check every choice. Neither country is on the list of countries whose residents need a tuberculosis test for a UK visa, and ATAS clearance is not required for an undergraduate medicine degree.

You apply for the Student visa online once you hold an unconditional offer and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your university, up to six months before the course starts. Because Australia and New Zealand are on the differential evidence list, you are not asked to upload your financial documents or the qualifications used to obtain the offer, but the decision maker can request them, so keep them ready.

After graduating: the Youth Mobility Scheme

Australian and New Zealand citizens have one more UK visa option that most international graduates do not: the Youth Mobility Scheme. It is open to nationals of both countries aged 18 to 35, lasts up to 24 months, and can be extended by a further year for Australian, Canadian and New Zealand nationals. It is applied for from outside the UK, so it suits a graduate who goes home after finals and comes back to work, and it needs no employer sponsorship. Check the age limit against your graduation date: a student who starts at 18 graduates at 23 or 24, well inside it.

Interviews from Australia and New Zealand: Online, in UK Time

Most UK medical schools now interview international applicants online, in the MMI format, between November and March, and a small number still prefer in-person interviews in the UK, so check each of your four choices before you commit. Online interviews are scheduled in UK time. The UK is on GMT from late October, so a 09:00 interview in December is 20:00 in Sydney and Melbourne, 19:00 in Brisbane, 17:00 in Perth and 22:00 in Auckland and Wellington. Afternoon UK slots can fall after midnight in New Zealand, so ask whether an earlier slot is available.

Interviewers expect you to understand medicine in the UK. Research the NHS, its six core values and the current NHS hot topics, and read UK health news for ten minutes a day; our Ultimate NHS Guide is the place to start. Then use your advantage: an Australian applicant can compare Medicare, private health insurance and the public hospital system with a tax-funded NHS, and a New Zealander can speak to Health New Zealand and rural workforce shortages, in a way UK applicants cannot. Can I Stay and Work in the UK After Graduating?

Yes, and the position for international graduates of UK medical schools improved in 2026. The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, which received Royal Assent on 5 March 2026, defines a UK medical graduate as the holder of a UK primary medical qualification, excluding only those who spent all or most of their training outside the British Islands. An international student who completes the whole degree at a UK medical school is therefore in the prioritised group for Foundation Programme places, and NHS England has confirmed that from 2027 the prioritisation applies at both shortlisting and offer.

• Foundation Programme: you apply through your medical school in the same way as home students. You must declare your visa status on the application, and visa sponsorship is arranged after allocation
• Graduate visa: two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 onwards. Anyone starting in 2027 will graduate under the 18-month rule, so plan on the shorter period
• Health and Care Worker visa: doctors are eligible, there is no Immigration Health Surcharge on this route, and the application fee is £324 for up to three years or £628 for longer

Immigration rules change frequently. Treat this as the position on 7 September 2026 and confirm on GOV.UK before you rely on it.

Keeping Your Options Open: Registration in Australia and New Zealand

A UK medical degree leads to registration with the General Medical Council and the NHS Foundation Programme, where UK graduates now have priority under the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, and most of our international students plan their careers in the UK. The facts below are for families who want the option of practising in Australia or New Zealand kept open.

A UK medical degree is respected in both countries, but neither Australia nor New Zealand lets a new UK graduate walk straight into a local internship. Both registration routes for UK graduates are built around one milestone: completing Foundation Year 1 (F1) in the UK, the natural first step after graduation, and holding full registration with the General Medical Council.

Australia: the competent authority pathway needs F1

The Medical Board of Australia treats the UK General Medical Council as a competent authority. A graduate of a UK medical school qualifies for the competent authority pathway only after completing Foundation Year 1 in the UK, or 12 months of supervised training equivalent to an internship there, and the Board states that applicants are not eligible without that experience. It accepts full GMC registration as evidence of it. Once eligible, you take a Board-approved post in Australia under provisional registration, complete 12 months of supervised practice (at least 47 weeks full time), and then move to general registration. There is no Australian Medical Council exam on this route.

A UK graduate without F1 is on the standard pathway instead: the AMC computer-based MCQ examination, then the AMC clinical examination or workplace-based assessment, then provisional registration and 12 months of supervised practice. The state intern systems do not open a side door. Victoria’s intern match says international medical graduates are not eligible for internship, and the 2027 priority lists we read for New South Wales, the ACT, Tasmania and the Northern Territory rank only graduates of Australian, New Zealand or AMC-accredited schools. Queensland considers international graduates only once they have passed the AMC MCQ or hold the AMC Certificate. Being an Australian citizen does not change the category a UK degree falls into.

New Zealand: the UK and Irish graduates pathway also needs an internship

The Medical Council of New Zealand also recognises the GMC as a competent authority. Its pathway for UK and Irish medical graduates requires a UK or Irish primary medical degree, an internship completed in the UK or Ireland (for a UK graduate, F1), and a job offer with supervision in New Zealand. You start in a provisional general scope and move to the general scope after six months of full-time supervised practice with satisfactory reports. The separate comparable health system pathway needs 33 months of practice in the last four years, so it suits doctors who have stayed in the UK for a few years, not new graduates. Without an internship, the remaining route is an examination (NZREX Clinical, PLAB or the AMC exams) followed by a PGY1 year in New Zealand, and the national ACE match for PGY1 jobs is not open to most international graduates. Health New Zealand’s recruitment page says New Zealand citizens and residents returning after studying medicine overseas can apply to its hospitals for PGY1, but the Council’s own pathways do not describe a registration route for that, so ask MCNZ in writing before you rely on it.

UK graduates receive provisional GMC registration when they graduate and full registration on completing F1, and every UK medical school now builds the UK Medical Licensing Assessment into finals. Registration rules change, so confirm the current position with the Medical Board of Australia (Ahpra), the Australian Medical Council or the Medical Council of New Zealand in the year you graduate.

Applying to the UK from Australia or New Zealand: A Timeline for 2027 and 2028 Entry

Work backwards from the UCAS deadline in October of Year 12. Two plans, because the southern-hemisphere school year splits ANZ applicants into two groups.

2027 entry: Year 12 in 2026

• By 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time (early on 16 October in Australia and New Zealand): submit the UCAS application with predicted grades and the reference
• By 22 October 2026: if you sat the UCAT ANZ, complete the Results Collection form so your result reaches your UK choices
• Late October to November 2026: final Year 12 exams; keep up NHS reading for interviews
• November 2026 to March 2027: online interviews in UK time, mostly in your evening
• 16 December 2026 (NSW and ACT ATARs) or mid to late January 2027 (NCEA): send your results to the universities holding your offers
• January to September 2027: the nine-month gap. Work, volunteer or study; firm your offer, receive your CAS and apply for the Student visa up to six months before the course starts; arrive for induction in September 2027

2028 entry: Year 12 in 2027, or a gap year after Year 12 in 2026

• Now to February 2027: confirm Chemistry and Biology (or the subjects each school asks for), start work experience and volunteering, keep a reflective diary
• November 2026 to March 2027: watch for the UCAT ANZ 2027 dates if you will also apply in Australia or New Zealand, and book from March
• March to May 2027: decide UCAT (UK) or UCAT ANZ; register for the UK UCAT in May and book the day booking opens in June
• July to September 2027: sit the UCAT (UCAT ANZ in July, UK UCAT from July to late September), draft the personal statement, ask for predicted grades
• September and early October 2027: choose four schools around your UCAT score and ATAR or NCEA prediction, with the registration routes above in mind if practising in Australia or New Zealand is a possibility, and submit before the mid-October 2027 UCAS deadline
• November 2027 to March 2028: online interviews; December 2027 or January 2028: final results; September 2028: start

Next Steps for Australian and New Zealand Students Applying to Medicine in the UK

1. If practising in Australia or New Zealand is a possibility, read the registration section before you finalise your shortlist
2. Choose UCAT (UK) or UCAT ANZ once, and never sit both in one year
3. Register and book the day booking opens
4. Start UCAT preparation with a tutor at least three months in advance
5. Ask your school in Term 2 who will write your reference and supply predicted grades
6. Draft your personal statement early and have it reviewed
7. Submit your UCAS application before 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, which is early on 16 October at home
