Studying Medicine in the UK from Europe after Brexit: A Complete Guide for EU, EEA and Swiss Students (2027 Entry)
Before 2021, a student from Germany, France, Spain or Greece applied to a UK medical school on the same footing as a British student: home fees, a tuition fee loan, no visa. That is no longer the case, and the change is the single most important thing for a European family to understand before falling for a UK medical degree.
This guide is for EU, EEA and Swiss students who want to study medicine in the UK. It covers who still qualifies for home fee status and who now pays international fees, the Student visa and the money you must show, how UK medical schools treat the Abitur, the Baccalauréat, the Matura and other European qualifications, sitting the UCAT from Europe, and whether a UK degree is recognised back home after Brexit.

Do EU Students Still Pay Home Fees in the UK?
For most EU, EEA and Swiss students starting in 2027, no. Since courses beginning on or after 1 August 2021, EU nationals are no longer automatically entitled to home fee status or student finance in England. Unless you fit one of the specific categories below, you are assessed as an international student, which for medicine means international tuition fees and a Student visa.
The decisive question is whether you were living in the UK before the end of the Brexit transition period. EU nationals who first came to the UK after 31 December 2020 cannot apply to the EU Settlement Scheme, and without settled or pre-settled status there is no route back to home fees.
Fee status is decided by each university under government regulations, not by the university being generous. You must fit every requirement of one home category; if you fit none, you pay international fees. The rules below are for England; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own regulations.
Who Still Qualifies for Home Fee Status in England
The categories that EU, EEA and Swiss nationals can still use for courses starting in 2027 are narrow. In outline:

Family members of people covered by the Withdrawal Agreement, children of Swiss nationals and family of a relevant person of Northern Ireland have their own categories. A minor amendment in March 2026 added a narrow exception for students awaiting decisions on late immigration applications; UKCISA describes it as affecting hardly anyone.
If you think you might qualify, gather the evidence early: your EUSS status share code, proof of three years of residence, and for Irish citizens proof of citizenship. If you know you do not qualify, plan the rest of the application as an international applicant and do not waste a term hoping for a different answer.
What International Fees Mean for a Medical Degree
Verified international tuition fees for the 2026/27 academic year. Figures for 2027 entry are published later in the cycle and are usually a little higher:

So a realistic planning figure is £40,000 to £60,000 a year, for five years at most schools and six at Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburgh. Add living costs and the visa money below and a five-year course runs comfortably past £300,000. A German or Austrian family used to near-zero tuition at home should weigh that against the English-taught alternatives in Europe and against Ireland.

The Student Visa for EU, EEA and Swiss Nationals
An EU national arriving from 1 January 2021 onwards without EU Settlement Scheme status needs a Student visa for any course longer than six months. An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is what Europeans now use to visit the UK; it covers tourism and short-term study of up to six months and is not a substitute for a Student visa on a five-year medical degree.
What you will need:
- A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from the medical school, issued after you firm an offer and pay any deposit
- Evidence of money: your first-year fees plus living costs of £1,529 a month for courses in London or £1,171 a month elsewhere, for up to nine months, held in the bank for 28 consecutive days ending within 31 days of your application
- The application fee of £558 from outside the UK, and the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 a year for students, paid up front for the length of the visa
- Proof of English at CEFR B2 or above; a licensed Higher Education Provider can assess this itself
You can apply up to six months before the course starts and decisions usually take around three weeks. Immigration rules change often; confirm on GOV.UK before you rely on any figure here.

Are the Abitur, Baccalauréat, Matura and Other European Qualifications Accepted?
Yes for most of them, but each medical school sets its own grade equivalents and the differences are large. The Medical Schools Council is explicit that medical schools accept different non-UK qualifications and their requirements vary. Two verified examples of published requirements for 2027 entry:

Three patterns are worth knowing before you build your shortlist:
- The Greek Apolytirion is often not accepted on its own. Queen Mary states that neither the Apolytirion with Panhellenic exams nor the Apolytirion with A Levels is accepted for its MBBS, and Edinburgh says the Apolytirion is not acceptable alone. Greek applicants usually need A Levels or the IB alongside it
- The Dutch VWO is accepted at some schools and not others; Imperial does not accept it for medicine, St Andrews does
- Where a school publishes only a generic requirement for your country, email admissions and get the equivalence in writing before you use a UCAS choice on it

English Language Requirements for European Applicants
Assume you will need IELTS Academic or an equivalent unless the medical school states in writing that it accepts the English component of your school-leaving qualification. Edinburgh, for example, states that its European qualification equivalences are for academic entry only and that English must be evidenced separately. We could not verify any medical school that accepts Abitur or Baccalauréat English in place of a test for medicine.

Sitting the UCAT from Europe
Nearly every UK medicine course requires the UCAT, and European candidates sit the same test as UK candidates. It is the UCAT, not the UCAT ANZ; sitting both in one year is prohibited.

The UCAT is delivered at Pearson VUE centres in more than 130 countries, and UCAT warns that for some EU candidates this can mean travelling to another country. UCAT does not publish a city list, so we do not name European cities as UCAT venues; register, open the Pearson VUE locator inside your account, and book the first suitable slot on the day booking opens. Online proctored delivery is only offered where travel is genuinely impractical.
Since 2025 the test has three scored subtests, Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning, each 300 to 900 for a total out of 2700, plus a Situational Judgement Test reported as Band 1 to Band 4. The 2025 mean total was 1891.

How Competitive Is It for European Applicants?
Medical school intakes in England are capped, and the Office for Students states that recent intake increases can only be used to recruit home students. Each school has a small, government-set quota of overseas places. Sheffield publishes 273 home places and 18 international places for its five-year course; UCL has indicated a similar order of magnitude for its overseas intake. The often-quoted figure of around 7.5 percent of places comes from older Department of Health guidance and we have not verified it on a current official page.
Before 2021 an EU applicant competed for home places. Now you compete for those few overseas places against applicants from every other country, and a strong UCAT, top grades and a confident interview are what separate the offers from the rejections.

How to Apply Through UCAS from Europe
- The deadline for medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses is 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, which is 19:00 in Berlin, Vienna, Brussels, Madrid and Zurich and 20:00 in Athens
- Applications for 2027 entry could be submitted from 1 September 2026
- A maximum of four of your five choices can be medicine; the fifth can be another subject
- You need predicted grades from your school, a teacher reference and a personal statement written to the UCAS structure

Interviews: Online for International Applicants
Birmingham states that international applicants interview online via Zoom regardless of where they are based. Sheffield invites international applicants to an online panel interview in January. Newcastle offers international applicants a panel interview that can be carried out online, or on campus if they prefer. A short flight to the UK for an in-person interview is realistic from most of Europe, so check each school and choose the format that suits you.

Foundation Routes if Your Qualification Is Not Accepted
A few routes exist for European students whose school system does not allow direct entry, but read the conditions carefully:
- University of Lancashire (formerly UCLan), Medicine and Surgery with Foundation Year (UCAS A101): a six-year MBBS open to international students only, with IELTS 6.5
- King's College London International Foundation, Health, Life and Biosciences pathway: for students whose school curriculum would not allow direct entry; a guaranteed MBBS interview if the UCAT threshold, predicted grades and experience criteria are met, but no guaranteed offer
- Gateway Year (A104) courses at schools such as UEA and Lancaster are for UK home students only, and Manchester’s International Foundation for medicine is restricted to government-sponsored students from Kuwait, Oman and Qatar

Will a UK Medical Degree Be Recognised in the EU After Brexit?
Not automatically any more. The European Commission is explicit: professional qualifications obtained in the UK after the end of the transition period are third-country qualifications under Directive 2005/36/EC, and automatic recognition for doctors applies only to qualifications obtained before 1 January 2021. A student starting in 2027 will graduate in 2032 and will need to obtain recognition in a member state under that country’s national rules and procedures.
In practice most EU states have established procedures for recognising a UK primary medical qualification, but they vary in speed, language requirements and whether any additional assessment is required. Check the competent authority in the country where you intend to practise (for example the Landesärztekammer in Germany, the Ordre des médecins in France or Belgium, or the Panhellenic Medical Association in Greece) before you commit, and expect the process to take longer than it did before 2021.
Within the UK the position is unchanged: a UK medical degree leads to General Medical Council registration, with the UK Medical Licensing Assessment built into finals from the 2024/25 academic year onwards.
Can I Stay and Work in the UK After Graduating?
Yes, and the position for international graduates of UK medical schools improved in 2026. The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026, which received Royal Assent on 5 March 2026, defines a UK medical graduate as the holder of a UK primary medical qualification, excluding only those who spent all or most of their training outside the British Islands. An international student who completes the whole degree at a UK medical school is therefore in the prioritised group for Foundation Programme places, and NHS England has confirmed that from 2027 the prioritisation applies at both shortlisting and offer.
- Foundation Programme: you apply through your medical school in the same way as home students. You must declare your visa status on the application, and visa sponsorship is arranged after allocation
- Graduate visa: two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 onwards. Anyone starting in 2027 will graduate under the 18-month rule, so plan on the shorter period
- Health and Care Worker visa: doctors are eligible, there is no Immigration Health Surcharge on this route, and the application fee is £324 for up to three years or £628 for longer
Immigration rules change frequently. Treat this as the position on 7 September 2026 and confirm on GOV.UK before you rely on it.

Where can I sit the UCAT in Europe?
At Pearson VUE test centres, found through the locator inside your UCAT account after registering. UCAT does not publish a city list and warns that some EU candidates may need to travel to another country, so register in May, book the moment booking opens on 23 June, and take the first suitable slot. The fee outside the UK is £115.
When is the UCAS deadline for medicine for 2027 entry?
15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, which is 19:00 Central European Time and 20:00 in Greece. Medical schools rarely consider late applications.
How many international places do UK medical schools have?
Very few. Intakes in England are capped and recent increases are for home students only, so each school has a small quota of overseas places; Sheffield publishes 18 international places against 273 home places. Since Brexit, EU applicants compete for these overseas places rather than for home places.
Will a UK medical degree be recognised in Germany, France or Spain after Brexit?
