  • Clinical teaching is based at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, a major dental teaching hospital in the region.

Sheffield University Dentistry Course Structure

Throughout the course Sheffield Dental School aim to teach you theory alongside clinical practice so you'll develop an understanding of dental science and its clinical application. You'll learn the value of evidence-based dentistry and how to apply it to clinical practice.

During the course you will learn how to treat patients of all ages with increasingly complex care needs. You'll learn more about oral diseases, their causes, how they develop and how to recognise, diagnose and prevent them.

Sheffield University Dentistry Interview Questions 2026

  • Semi-Structured Panel Interview and separate Interpersonal skills test
  • All In-person for 2026 entry

Interview dates

Sheffield BDS 2026 cycle, we will be interviewing from 20-27 February 2025. Applicants will be notified by invitation to interview towards the end of January and will be able to pick from a range of dates.

Your interview will be conducted using a semi-structured format and last up to 15 minutes. The interview panels comprise two members of academic staff and a senior dental student who are trained to assess you in the following three areas:

  • Talk us through a decision in your life where you weighed up competing priorities and chose what mattered most to you. What did that choice reveal about your values, and how do those values map onto a career in dentistry?
  • Personal qualities and communication skills
  • Sheffield offers a particular style of integrated, clinically-early training. Setting league tables aside, which specific features of our programme made you apply here, and how do they fit the kind of dentist you want to become?

You will be assessed in these areas with reference to the information you have provided in your personal statement. Interviewers expect you to be able to demonstrate that you are well-informed about your decision to study dentistry and your decision to study at Sheffield.

Interpersonal Skills Test

As part of the selection procedure, we make an assessment of your interpersonal skills. This will take place as a separate assessment from your interview and will be a group task aiming to assess:

  • Communication skills
  • Empathy
  • Compassion

🗣️ How to prepare for your University of Sheffield dentistry interview (Panel format)

  1. Sheffield runs a structured panel interview rather than a high-station MMI circuit, so prepare to sustain a coherent conversation with two or more interviewers across linked follow-ups instead of resetting every few minutes. Practise holding a thread under gentle probing using our practice dentistry interview questions so you stay fluent when they dig deeper.
  2. Expect a direct "Why Sheffield?" and be ready to name concrete reasons beyond ranking: the early clinical contact, the integrated outreach and community placements across South Yorkshire, and the patient-centred ethos of the School of Clinical Dentistry. Build your differentiation by weighing it honestly against the teaching styles and clinical models of your other choices on our compare UK dental schools hub.
  3. Past Sheffield candidates have been asked unusually personal-context questions, including how they would adapt to student life away from home and which clubs, volunteering, or interests they would keep up alongside the demanding course. Have two or three genuine, specific commitments in mind, and rehearse this in a 1-1 dentistry interview coaching session so your answers feel natural rather than rehearsed.
  4. Sheffield often explores how you came to be sure dentistry suits your strengths and temperament, and what trade-offs you accept about the day-to-day reality of the job. Prepare a reflective narrative of how you reached that conviction, drawing on our a career in dentistry guide to speak credibly about the training pathway and day-to-day realities.
  5. Candidates report being asked to reflect on a specific interaction or task during work experience that changed how they think about clinical care, rather than just listing where they shadowed. Use our dentistry work experience guide to turn shadowing into insight about teamwork, patient anxiety, and the limits of treatment.
  6. Sheffield interviewers probe resilience and how you respond to setbacks, for instance a time a long project or commitment didn't go to plan, so prepare one or two structured stories using a clear situation-action-reflection shape. Run them aloud with the free mock interview generator on this page to check your timing and that you finish on what you learned.
  7. Topical NHS knowledge has appeared, including why access to NHS dentistry has become so uneven, how funding pressures create treatment 'deserts', and the workforce and recruitment challenges practices now face. Read around current NHS dentistry access problems so you can discuss why reform matters, not just describe the symptoms.
  8. Be ready for a probity and professionalism scenario, for instance noticing that a colleague has falsified or signed off clinical records that aren't accurate. Frame your answer around GDC Standards on honesty and raising concerns, and rehearse the reasoning with our answering ethics interview questions guide so you balance loyalty with patient safety and integrity.
  9. Communication and empathy come up directly, for example being asked how you would explain a treatment plan to a patient who is frightened of needles. While role-play is less central in Sheffield's panel than in a full MMI, practise explaining clearly, using tell-show-do language and step-by-step reassurance, and borrow technique from our ultimate MMI preparation guide.
  10. Manual dexterity and the practical demands of dentistry can surface when they ask why fine-motor precision matters clinically and what you actively do to develop it. Have specific evidence ready (a craft, instrument, sport, or fine-motor hobby) and connect it to clinical precision; our 200+ dentistry interview Q&A guide shows strong ways to phrase this.
  11. Sheffield often asks about the realistic downsides and pressures of a dental career, so show balanced insight: musculoskeletal strain, emotional demands of anxious patients, financial and regulatory pressures, and limited NHS funding. Ground this in the realities of training and entry using our how to become a dentist and entry requirements guide.
  12. Your panel may draw on themes and motivations from your application, so re-read it and prepare to expand any experience, value, or reading you mentioned. Tighten the underlying narrative first with our dentistry personal statement help, or our dentistry personal statement guide if you want to self-edit before interview season.
  13. Sheffield typically gives you a chance to raise your own questions, so prepare one or two thoughtful, school-specific points about outreach placements, integrated learning, or patient contact rather than something easily found on the website. This signals genuine interest in their course rather than a generic finish.
  14. Sheffield panels also explore self-awareness, for example what you would most want to develop during the course and how you handle honest feedback, so prepare evidence-backed examples instead of adjectives. For sustained, feedback-driven preparation across all of these themes, consider our full dentistry application packages alongside targeted question practice.
