Is Medicine Interview Tutoring Worth It? An Honest Look

Interview tutoring is worth it for some medicine applicants and a waste of money for others. It earns its cost when you have no access to realistic practice, when the format itself unnerves you, or when you have interviewed before and did not convert it.

It does not earn its cost when you already speak comfortably under pressure, or when you have not yet worked through the free question banks. Prices run from £125 for a single marked mock to £749 for ten hours of 1-1 coaching.

I am an NHS GP and I founded TheUKCATPeople in 2012. We sell interview tutoring, so weigh what follows accordingly. I have written the version I would want a parent to read, including the parts that cost us sales.

What it costs

These are our own prices, and they are the ones I will keep referring to below.

• A single marked mock: £125. One hour, split as a 30-minute Panel or MMI style mock with 4 to 6 minute stations, then 30 minutes of live feedback, tailored to your chosen universities.
• The one-day interview course: £179. A live online day, 9am to 4pm, that I teach myself, with 14 days of access to our Ultimate Interview Q&A Guide (500+ questions).
• Five hours of 1-1 coaching: £449, delivered by an interview expert matched to the universities on your list.
• Ten hours of 1-1 coaching: £749, with the Ultimate Q&A Guide included free, worth £349 on its own.

The evidence, and what it does not prove

Last year, 98% of our students who completed 20 or more hours of interview tutoring and sat at least one interview received an offer, 100 of 102. That counts students on our full tutoring programme, not everyone who buys a single mock, and it is our own students’ outcome taken from our own records, not an independent trial.

I would not read it as proof that tutoring caused those offers. Families who buy interview tutoring tend to be motivated, already invited to interview, and already working hard. Selection explains part of a number like that, and any provider quoting a similar figure has the same problem.

What I can claim is narrower. Applicants who rehearse under realistic conditions and receive specific written feedback walk in calmer and answer more clearly. That is the thing you are actually buying.

When interview tutoring is not worth it

Four situations, and I see all four every season.

• You already interview well: If you speak comfortably under pressure, think out loud without freezing, and people tell you that you come across warmly, tutoring adds less than you would hope. Rehearse with the free banks and keep the money.
• You have not done the free groundwork: Work through our free ultimate medicine interview questions guide and the 280 practice interview questions first. Paying someone to walk you through material you could have read for nothing is an expensive way to start.
• You have no interview invites yet: Very early in the cycle there is nothing university-specific to rehearse. The same money buys sharper preparation later, once you know which formats you are facing.
• The budget genuinely stretches: If paying for this would hurt, do not pay for it. A free school mock interview and a family friend who asks cold questions and refuses to be kind about the answers get you a long way. When it is worth paying for

• You have no access to realistic practice: Some schools run mock interviews well, some run none at all. If nobody around you will sit opposite you and ask hard questions with a straight face, that gap is real, and buying practice is the direct fix for it.
• The MMI format is what worries you: Timed stations, a bell, a new examiner every few minutes and no chance to recover a bad start. Rehearsing that circuit is not something you can improvise at the kitchen table.
• You are reapplying after a poor interview: If you were invited last cycle and did not convert, the problem is usually specific and fixable, and it takes an outside ear to name it. This is the group I would spend on first.
• You are a non-standard applicant: Graduate entry, international, mature and access-route applicants get asked things the general guides do not rehearse, and the answers need to be built rather than recalled.
• Your universities interview in very different ways: An Oxbridge-style academic panel and a multi-station MMI circuit ask different things of you. Preparing properly for both at once is where structured coaching earns its money.

What good interview tutoring looks like, at any provider

Use this to judge whoever you are considering, this company included.

• One to one, not a group: Interview practice works when you are the one answering. A webinar where you watch someone else answer is a different product at a different price.
• Matched to your universities: Your tutor should know how the universities on your list actually interview, and build the mocks around those formats rather than a generic circuit.
• Marked mocks with structured written feedback: Every mock should come back scored on the domains examiners use, naming the specific fixes to work on before the next one. Verbal encouragement is not feedback.
• Realistic station practice: Timed stations of 4 to 6 minutes, a real interviewer, and no restarts when an answer goes wrong.
• Vetting you can ask about: Ours are verified as having scored in the top 10% of the exam they teach where that applies, hold an enhanced DBS check, have professional references requested, and are interviewed by us before an offer. Everyone who gets through is then trained and mentored by our programme leads.
• A straight answer about who teaches: Our sessions are delivered 1-1 by an interview expert matched to your universities, not by a doctor. Ask any provider the same question, and treat a vague answer as an answer.

What tutoring cannot buy you

Three things no amount of coaching supplies, and they weigh more than anything on the price list above.

• Things you have actually done: Interviews reward specific experience, reflected on honestly. A tutor can help you find the reflection inside a memory you already hold. Nobody can put the memory there for you.
• Reading you have not done: Pressures on the NHS, the four pillars of ethics, the debates running in medicine right now. Coaching sharpens how you use that reading under pressure. It does not stand in for having read it.
• Repetition: What changes an interview is answering out loud, over and over, to someone who is not quietly helping you along. Paid hours concentrate that work. They do not replace the hours you put in on your own.

Applicants get the most from paid hours when they arrive having already done all three. If none of it is done yet, spend the next fortnight on it and decide about tutoring afterwards.

The four routes compared

How I would spend it, in order

Start with the free question banks and a school mock, and stop there if that is enough. Most applicants find out quickly whether it is.

If you can only buy one thing, buy a single marked mock at £125, and buy it early enough that the feedback still has time to change something. A mock two days before your interview tells you what is wrong without leaving room to fix it.

If you have several interviews in different formats, or you are reapplying, a block of hours is the better instrument. Five hours covers focused work on the weak spots; ten hours covers several full mocks plus the coaching between them.

The course day sits outside that ladder. At £179 it buys frameworks and structure in October or November, before invites land, which is a different job from rehearsing for a named university in December.
