The short answer

UEA graduate entry medicine, 2027 entry

To apply for UEA graduate entry medicine (MBBS A101, four years, 2027 entry) you need a 2:1 degree, achieved or predicted, plus either a GAMSAT result in any degree subject or a UCAT result if your degree is one of 13 listed biomedical-related subjects awarded within five years of the course start.

UEA has 30 places for 2027 entry, subject to Office for Students confirmation, and the course is open to UK (home) fee payers only. UEA sets no cut-off score: the overall GAMSAT or UCAT score ranks applicants for interview.

Interviews at UEA are a six-station multiple mini interview (MMI) on campus between February and March. After interview, UEA ranks applicants with the interview score and the GAMSAT or UCAT score weighted equally, and offers go to the top-ranking candidates.

The first decision

GAMSAT or UCAT at UEA: which route your degree allows

UEA accepts either test, but the choice is not open to every applicant. The route you can use depends on your degree subject and how recently you graduated.

Biomedical graduates cannot switch tests

If you hold a biomedical-related degree and have sat GAMSAT, UEA ranks you on your GAMSAT score. You cannot choose to apply with a UCAT score instead, so decide which test you are presenting before you sit it.

UEA says a high score is advantageous and a low score does not disqualify you from consideration. If you are weighing up the two tests, our GAMSAT guide sets out how the GAMSAT is structured and scored.

UCAT route

The 13 biomedical-related degrees that open UEA's UCAT route

For 2027 entry, UEA will consider UCAT applicants whose bachelor's degree is in one of these subjects and was awarded within five years of the start of the course:

  • Biomedical Science
  • Clinical Science
  • Physiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Pharmacology
  • Neuroscience
  • Medical Science
  • Molecular Genetics
  • Molecular Biology
  • Pharmacy
  • Physician Associate
  • Cancer Sciences
  • Pharmaceutical Science

If your degree is not on this list, or it was awarded more than five years before September 2027, the GAMSAT route is the one open to you. The GAMSAT route has no subject requirement and no recent-study requirement.

Admissions tests

GAMSAT or UCAT for UEA?

Which test suits you depends on your degree, your timeline and your other choices. We tutor both, and a free call is enough to work out which one to sit.

Selection

How UEA shortlists, then weighs your test and interview equally

  1. 1

    Primary screening

Every application submitted by the deadline is checked against the minimum academic criteria, and for a satisfactory personal statement and reference. You also need a valid GAMSAT result, or a valid UCAT result on the biomedical route.

  2. 2

    Secondary screening

Where applications exceed interview places, UEA ranks applicants on their overall GAMSAT or UCAT score and invites the highest-ranking to interview. There is no fixed cut-off.

  3. 3

    Multiple mini interview

Invitations arrive by email. The MMI takes place on campus between February and March.

  4. 4

    Final ranking and offers

After interviews, applicants are ranked within their cohort with the interview score and the GAMSAT or UCAT score weighted equally. Offers go to the top-ranking candidates.

Because your test score counts a second time at the offer stage, a strong GAMSAT or UCAT result keeps working for you after the interview. It can help to give test preparation and interview preparation equal time in your plans.

Interview

UEA's six-station MMI: 5 minutes per station, 90 seconds to prepare

  • Format: multiple mini interview, held on campus. UEA can only interview you in the format given in your invitation.
  • Stations: six, each with a different interviewer.
  • Timing: 5 minutes at each station, with 1.5 minutes of preparation time.
  • Content: UEA does not disclose the questions, but each one is written from the Medical Schools Council statement on the core values and attributes needed to study medicine.
  • Work experience: if you are invited to interview, you must provide two examples of relevant work experience that informed your decision to study medicine.
  • When: between February and March.

It helps to pick your two work experience examples early and be ready to explain what each one taught you about the role of a doctor. Five-minute stations with 90 seconds of preparation suit practice under timed conditions, for example through mock MMIs. For other schools' windows, see the interview dates table.

The course

Healthcare assistant training in year one, a 20-week GP placement in year three

UEA highlights two placements. In year one you are trained as a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) and placed in a healthcare team, and completing that training lets you join the HCA staff bank and work as an HCA throughout the course. In year three you spend a 20-week longitudinal integrated clerkship embedded in a general practice, following a group of patients over time.

UEA A101 year by year, as described on the 2027/28 course page
YearFocus
1Foundations of medicine: core science and body systems, medical ethics and law, health psychology and sociology, HCA training and a primary care placement
2Pathology, disease, diagnosis and management, with integrated secondary care placements across specialties
3Children's and women's health, older people's medicine, oncology, palliative care and psychiatry, plus the longitudinal GP placement and a quality improvement project
4Psychiatry, emergency medicine, acute surgery, anaesthetics and intensive care, a student assistantship, and the Medical Licensing Assessment

Teaching mixes small-group case-based learning, lectures, online material, simulation and patient-led consultation skills sessions. Placements are based at three hubs across Norfolk and Waveney: Norwich, Great Yarmouth and King's Lynn. UEA envisages year one mainly on campus and then a year at each hub, and says it will work with you on hub allocation according to your personal needs.

Who can apply

Home fee payers only, with rules on current and interrupted study

  • The course is open to UK (home) fee payers only. UEA welcomes applicants from Norfolk and Waveney, and assesses them within the main ranking process alongside everyone else.
  • You must have completed any current course of study, including a master's or PhD, and provided official evidence of the award by 1 September 2027.
  • Applicants in the first or second year of a degree are not considered, and nor are those who started a degree but did not complete it.
  • Anyone who has studied, or is studying, medicine in the UK or overseas is not considered, and UEA does not accept transfers.
  • Resits, repeated years and study interruptions are considered case by case, and do not automatically disadvantage you if you meet (or are predicted to meet) the 2:1.
  • You must be 18 or over by the start of the course because of first-year placements.
  • If English is not your first language, UEA may ask for IELTS 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each component.

If you have gaps in your education, UEA asks you to explain in your personal statement what you did or plan to do during them. The course page does not list a fee: it links to UEA's general tuition fees page and to the NHS guidance on funding for accelerated courses.

Interviews run between February and March.

How many places does UEA have for graduate entry medicine?

UEA has 30 places for 2027 entry, subject to confirmation by the Office for Students.

I sat GAMSAT but have a biomedical degree. Can I use UCAT instead?
