The short answer

Bangor graduate entry medicine, 2027 entry

Bangor graduate entry medicine is the four-year BMBS (UCAS code A101) at the North Wales Medical School, and you need a 2:1 in one of four feeder degrees or in a degree relevant to medical studies, BBB/ABC at A level including Biology and Chemistry, a UCAT score, and permanent UK residency with home fee status.

Graduates who are not from a feeder stream are assessed through Recognition of Prior Education and Learning (RPEL): they must contact Bangor before applying, and if shortlisted they sit a 90-minute single best answer entrance exam straight after their interview. Bangor states that there are 20 places on the course each year.

Eligible applicants are ranked by UCAT score for interview, and offers go to those with the highest multiple mini interview (MMI) scores. Interviews are held in person in Bangor only.

Eligibility

Two ways into Bangor A101: a feeder degree or the RPEL route

Bangor's course is built first for high-performing students from four recognised feeder streams, the same four degrees that feed Cardiff's A101. Unlike Cardiff, Bangor also considers graduates of other degree programmes relevant to medical studies, including dentistry, through an individual Recognition of Prior Education and Learning (RPEL) assessment.

Dental graduates who have completed further postgraduate training and professional qualifications with the aim of specialising in oral and maxillofacial surgery can apply with a full CV and an academic reference or a reference from a maxillofacial surgeon. Bangor says it will also consider dental graduates seeking to qualify in medicine. If your degree fits neither route, the UK graduate entry course list shows which courses take any subject.

RPEL route

The Bangor entrance exam: 90 minutes on first-year medical science

Applicants on the RPEL route who are shortlisted take the MMI and then the entrance exam on the same visit. Feeder-stream applicants do not sit it. Bangor delivers the exam in person on its campus through the Medical Schools Council Assessment Alliance (MSCAA) platform, with no online option.

  • Format: single best answer questions, each with five possible answers, over 90 minutes.
  • Content: mapped to the learning outcomes of Year 1 of Bangor's medicine course, with the pass mark set by a standard-setting group and a psychometrician.
  • Topics listed for the 2026 entry exam include cell structure and signalling, histology, the musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and genitourinary systems, the upper limb, fluid and pH balance, energy metabolism and nutrition, enzymes and pharmacology, immunity, imaging and the physiology and psychology of stress.
  • Extra time: if you are eligible, contact Bangor at least two weeks before the exam with evidence.

Bangor says applicants who are unsuccessful in the exam but score well at interview may be considered for an alternative offer on its five-year A100 course. Those who do not score well in the exam or the interview are rejected.

Selection

From UCAT ranking to offer: how Bangor selects for A101

  1. 1

    Academic check

Your degree class (predicted class must meet the 2:1), A levels at BBB/ABC with Biology and Chemistry, and GCSEs at B/6 in English or Welsh Language, Maths and science (the Medical Schools Council listing for 2027 entry accepts double science at BB/66 or Biology and Chemistry at B/6), plus four other GCSEs at B/6. BTEC, Access courses and T Levels are not accepted.

  2. 2

    UCAT ranking

Eligible applicants are pooled and ranked by UCAT score, and interviews go to the highest scorers until slots are filled. There is no minimum score, and Bangor says the situational judgement band is currently not considered.

  3. 3

Invitation, usually before the end of November

UCAS shows a dummy interview date, which is not your real date. Bangor emails you the next day to book your own slot; if nothing arrives within 48 hours of the UCAS invite, you must email Bangor. Slots fill quickly, and if you do not book before the booking closing date Bangor cannot make other arrangements.

  4. 4

    In-person MMI in Bangor

About one hour, rotating around six verbal stations with two questions per station and three minutes to answer each question, plus three minutes between stations to read the next two questions. No pen and paper, and no online alternative.

  5. 5

    Offers ranked by interview score

Interviewed applicants are pooled and ranked by MMI score, and offers go to the highest scorers. Bangor says applicants should hear back by the end of March.

Once you are shortlisted, offers follow the MMI ranking, and RPEL-route applicants also need to do well in the entrance exam. Rehearsing two-question stations against a three-minute timer, for example through MMI mock interviews, may help you prepare.

Before you apply

Residency, deferral and resit rules that exclude Bangor applicants

Check these before you use a medicine choice on Bangor

Bangor is closed to international applicants: you need permanent UK residency and home fee status on the day you apply, and it will not consider applicants still awaiting permanent residency. It does not accept deferred applications or Level 3 resits, and you can apply to Bangor for a maximum of two cycles.

  • Your Level 3 qualifications should normally be no more than five years old at the start of the course, unless you have continued in relevant health-related education or work.
  • Applicants who hold Biology or Chemistry plus one other science at A level, without both, are considered case by case and should contact Bangor first.
  • Anyone who has previously studied medicine or another professional health programme must tell Bangor before applying.
  • The UCAT validity window differs between Bangor's course page and the Medical Schools Council listing, so confirm with medicineadmissions@bangor.ac.uk which UCAT sittings Bangor will accept for 2027 entry.

The course

Four years in North Wales, including a full year inside a GP practice

Bangor says the General Medical Council agreed a 2024 start for the North Wales Medical School's own programme, which followed several years of delivering Cardiff's C21 North Wales programme. The school is progressing through the GMC approval process, which is completed only when the first intake is due to graduate, and its contingency partner is Cardiff University School of Medicine.

  • August summer school: three weeks of clinical skills and an introduction to case-based learning (CBL) before the academic year.
  • Phase 1: corresponds to Year 2 of the five-year A100 course: core science and clinical practice, taught mainly through CBL in small groups of about ten with a facilitator.
  • Phase 2: more clinical time in hospitals and GP surgeries, applying and building on earlier learning. Bangor lists a full year at a GP surgery among its placements.
  • Phase 3: the final year, learning at work with a more active role in clinical teams, to prepare you for work as a Foundation doctor.

Placements run across North Wales, from coastal towns and rural villages to cities and hospitals, and include mountain medicine. Your campus is Bangor, but it may change to Wrexham in later years depending on placement. If you study part of the course in Welsh, you are given a Welsh-medium tutor.
