The short answer

Cardiff graduate entry medicine, 2027 entry

Cardiff graduate entry medicine is the four-year MBBCh (UCAS code A101), and it is open only to students graduating with a first or 2:1 in one of four recognised feeder degrees (Cardiff Medical Pharmacology B210, Cardiff Biomedical Sciences BC97, Bangor Medical Sciences B100 or University of South Wales Medical Sciences B901), plus a UCAT taken in the year you apply.

Cardiff's 2027 admissions policy says graduates of other science or non-science degrees are not eligible for A101 and should look at the five-year A100 course, which takes graduates with a 2:1 in any subject. Dentistry graduates are the one exception: Cardiff can offer a maximum of two A101 places each cycle to them.

Shortlisted applicants sit a multiple mini interview (MMI), and Cardiff makes no offer without one. Graduate entrants join the second year of Cardiff's C21 curriculum after a summer school in August, with placements across Wales.

Eligibility

The four feeder degrees that lead to Cardiff A101

Cardiff's four-year course is not an open graduate entry route. The course page says it is only for those on our recognised feeder streams, and the university describes it as part of its commitment to widen access to medicine: small numbers of selected feeder students take additional modules during their first degree, which makes them eligible to apply.

Recognised feeder streams for Cardiff A101 (2027 entry)

BSc (Hons) Medical PharmacologyCardiff University, School of MedicineB210
BSc (Hons) Biomedical SciencesCardiff University, School of BiosciencesBC97
BMedSci (Hons) Medical SciencesBangor UniversityB100
BSc (Hons) Medical SciencesUniversity of South WalesB901

You need to graduate with a first or 2:1 and to have completed the feeder stream's pre-requisite modules. The 2027 policy adds that each feeder course sets the individual academic performance needed to stay eligible, and that the arrangements for the Bangor (B100) and University of South Wales (B901) streams are currently under review.

A science degree from elsewhere does not qualify

Cardiff's 2027 policy is explicit: graduates with a science-based degree that is not an approved feeder stream, and graduates of non-science degrees, are not eligible for A101 (the four-year programme). If that is you, a UCAS choice spent on Cardiff A101 cannot lead to an offer.

Other graduates

Not on a feeder stream: graduate entry to Cardiff's five-year A100

Cardiff's policy sends other graduates to the five-year MBBCh (A100). For 2027 entry, A100 accepts graduates with a 2:1 honours degree in any subject, as long as they also meet the GCSE requirements and hold Level 3 qualifications equivalent to A level BBB or ABC, including Biology or Chemistry and a second science from Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Physics or Psychology.

  • Final-year students can apply; the degree must be awarded by 31 August of the year of entry.
  • PhD graduates need Level 3 equivalent to BBC with the same subject rules, and must contact medadmissions@cardiff.ac.uk before applying.
  • Transfers onto A100 or A101 are not accepted.

If you want a four-year course in Wales without a feeder degree, Swansea graduate entry medicine takes a 2:1 in any subject, and Bangor's A101 considers graduates of degrees relevant to medical studies through an assessment route. The full list of UK graduate entry courses compares the rest.

The exception

Dentistry graduates: up to two A101 places a cycle

Graduates with a Bachelor's in Dental Surgery (BDS) with honours are not eligible for A100 and are considered for A101 instead. Cardiff's 2027 policy caps this at a maximum of two places each cycle. The course page says dental graduates must also have completed further postgraduate training and obtained appropriate professional qualifications.

  • Send a full CV to medadmissions@cardiff.ac.uk when you make your UCAS application.
  • A reference from a maxillofacial surgeon can replace the academic reference.
  • The same GCSE and Level 3 rules apply (Level 3 equivalent to BBB or ABC with Biology or Chemistry plus a second science).
  • On top of the UCAT and MMI, you may be asked to a panel interview that includes local oral and maxillofacial surgeons, to confirm you intend to follow the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons training route.

Selection

How Cardiff scores feeder applicants and chooses who to interview

  1. 1

    Meet the minimum requirements

BBB/ABC at A level including Biology and Chemistry (or IB 32 with the stated subjects), English or Welsh language GCSE at B/6, and 8 GCSEs including B/6 in Maths, Biology and Chemistry. The 2027 policy lets feeder graduates offer the feeder stream's Foundation Year in lieu of the Level 3 requirement.

  2. 2

Sit the UCAT between July and October 2026

Results from previous years are not accepted. There is no fixed UCAT threshold, but Cardiff says a UCAT cut-off may be applied to shortlist further.

  3. 3

    Receive an academic score

Cardiff scores your achieved Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications together with your UCAT decile ranking, and the highest-scoring applicants are invited to interview. Where more applicants share a score than there are interview places, Cardiff may use the UCAT score to separate them.

  4. 4

    Personal statement and reference

Both are assessed for insight into a career in medicine, experience and reflection in a caring environment, personal responsibility, a balanced approach to life and self-directed learning.

  5. 5

    Multiple mini interview

Cardiff makes no offer without an interview. Its MMI looks at whether you can think on your feet, have thought about issues important to the profession, can critically appraise information and can communicate ideas effectively.

Cardiff gives additional consideration in the scoring for applicants domiciled in Wales, for contextual applicants, for participants in named widening participation schemes and for its High Performance Sports Programmes; you receive consideration in one category only. The course page notes that its points-based scoring process is under review, so it helps to check the current policy before you apply.

Your UCAT decile feeds straight into the academic score, so if you are on a feeder stream it may help to plan your UCAT preparation for the summer before final year, and to practise MMI-style answers with mock interviews before invitations go out.

The course

Joining the C21 curriculum in Year 2, with a summer school in August

A101 students follow a course identical to Years 2 to 5 of Cardiff's five-year MBBCh, which Cardiff calls C21. Your first year is the equivalent of Year 2 for the cohort you join.

  • You start in August, earlier than other Year 2 students, with a summer school of about two to three weeks introducing case-based learning (CBL) and clinical history taking and examination.
  • The rest of your first year is a series of CBL cases, each lasting about two weeks with a trained facilitator, linking basic sciences to common conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and musculoskeletal injuries.
  • You spend a day most weeks seeing patients in hospitals, general practices and community services around south east Wales.
  • Later years move to extended placements in hospitals and GP surgeries throughout Wales; Cardiff provides accommodation for placements further away from south Wales.
  • You can intercalate for a year to complete a medically related BSc.

Curriculum under review

Cardiff says the modules on its course page are an example of the typical curriculum and will be reviewed before the 2027/28 academic year, with the final modules published by September 2027.

FAQs

Cardiff graduate entry medicine: common questions

Can I apply to Cardiff graduate entry medicine with a biomedical science degree from another university?

No. Cardiff's 2027 policy says graduates with a science-based degree that is not an approved feeder stream are not eligible for A101.

The only biomedical sciences degree that qualifies is Cardiff's own BSc Biomedical Sciences (BC97). Other graduates can apply to Cardiff's five-year A100 course with a 2:1 in any subject and the A100 GCSE and Level 3 requirements.

Which degrees are Cardiff's feeder streams for A101?

There are four: Cardiff Medical Pharmacology (B210), Cardiff Biomedical Sciences (BC97), Bangor BMedSci Medical Sciences (B100) and University of South Wales Medical Sciences (B901).

You must graduate with a first or 2:1 and complete the pre-requisite modules. Cardiff's 2027 policy notes that the Bangor and University of South Wales arrangements are under review.

Does Cardiff A101 use UCAT or GAMSAT?

UCAT only. You must sit it between July and October of the year you apply, and results from earlier years are not accepted.

Cardiff has no fixed threshold but uses your UCAT decile ranking in the academic score, and says a UCAT cut-off may be applied to shortlist further.

Can a dentist apply to Cardiff graduate entry medicine?

Yes, as the one exception to the feeder rule. Cardiff can offer a maximum of two A101 places each cycle to dentistry graduates.

You need a BDS with honours, further postgraduate training and professional qualifications, the GCSE and Level 3 requirements, a full CV sent at the point of application, and you may face an extra panel interview that includes oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

Do Welsh applicants get an advantage at Cardiff?

Cardiff's 2027 policy gives additional consideration in the scoring process to applicants who are domiciled in Wales.

It is one of several categories (with contextual applicants, named widening participation schemes and high performance sport), and an applicant eligible for more than one receives consideration in one category only.

Can international students apply to Cardiff A101?

The Medical Schools Council listing for September 2027 entry gives the eligibility as UK only. Cardiff's own course page does not say that international applicants are accepted.

Is there an interview for Cardiff graduate entry medicine?

Yes. Cardiff makes no offer without an interview, and it uses the multiple mini interview format of short, timed stations.

Cardiff has not published interview dates for the 2027 entry cycle.
