Graduate Entry Medicine at Surrey: 2027 Entry

Surrey's four-year BMBS takes a 2:1 in any subject and interviews online. Which admissions test you can use depends on what you studied: GAMSAT works for every degree, UCAT only for five science subjects.

The short answer

Surrey graduate entry medicine, 2027 entry

Surrey Graduate Entry Medicine (BMBS, UCAS code A101) is a four-year course in Guildford for graduates with at least a 2:1 UK honours degree (or equivalent) in any subject, GCSE Maths and English at grade C (5), and a GAMSAT result, or a UCAT result if your degree is in Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Science, Chemistry or Natural Sciences.

Surrey shortlists on academic record, then sorts admissions test scores into invite, waiting list or reject. Shortlisted applicants take part in a virtual multiple mini-interview cycle lasting under one hour, and 2027 dates are still to be confirmed.

Surrey accepts international applicants. Fees for 2027-28 are £10,050 a year for UK students and £50,300 a year for overseas students. Surrey is a new medical school under GMC review, with the University of Exeter as its contingency school.

Admissions test

GAMSAT for every degree, UCAT for five: which test Surrey will take from you

Surrey's course page names GAMSAT as stage 2 of selection, and its 2026 entry policy says GAMSAT lets it compare applicants whose first degrees are not science based. UCAT is an alternative only if your degree is in one of five subjects. Every applicant must sit one of the two.

UCAT applicants: watch the SJT band

Surrey's admissions policy for 2026 entry says applicants using UCAT needed Situational Judgement Test band 3 or above to be considered for interview, and anyone with band 4 was rejected. The 2027 course page links to that policy as a guide; check it again when the 2027 version appears.

Under the 2026 entry policy, GAMSAT results were valid for two years (the March and September sittings of the application year and the year before), and a UCAT result for one year only. If you are choosing between the tests, our GAMSAT guide sets out what the exam involves.

Selection

Three stages from application to offer

  1. 1

    Stage 1: preliminary shortlisting

Applications from UCAS are checked on academic achievement and achieved or predicted grades. Most applications that miss the minimum requirements, and some with incomplete information, are rejected here.

  2. 2

    Stage 2: admissions test

Your GAMSAT or UCAT result is given an overall mark and placed in one of three groups: invite to interview, hold on a waiting list, or reject. The 2026 entry policy describes this as an anonymised ranking by test score.

  3. 3

    Stage 3: multiple mini-interviews

Shortlisted applicants join one of several virtual interview events and complete an MMI cycle lasting under one hour. Each station assesses a specific competency and is marked independently against agreed criteria.

  4. 4

    Outcome

After the MMI you are placed in one of three groups: offer, waiting list, or reject. Offers depend on occupational health clearance and vaccinations.

The 2026 entry policy says personal statements and references are not scored, although they may be reviewed, and that work experience in caregiving is desirable and is not essential. Surrey does not publish a test cut-off or a number of places.

Because the whole interview happens on screen, it helps to practise MMI stations over video, with attention to camera, sound and timing. A mock interview on the same set-up you will use on the day is one way to rehearse.

Accreditation

A new medical school still under GMC review

Surrey's School of Medicine is listed on the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised by the General Medical Council as a new school under review. The course page refers to the second graduate entry cohort starting in 2025.

Every new UK medical school goes through this process. The GMC monitors the programme on a rolling basis, and final approval to award a UK medical degree comes when the first cohort graduates. If accreditation were delayed, the University of Exeter would act as Surrey's contingency school and award GMC-accredited degrees.

The course

Four years between the Kate Granger Building and Surrey's NHS trusts

Course structure (2027-28 course page)
YearFocus
1Eight teaching blocks built around medical scenarios, starting with an introduction to graduate entry medicine. Anatomy from human prosections, ultrasound-guided surface anatomy and live-streamed surgery; placements in general practice and community mental health.
2 and 3Clinical Pathways 1 and 2, based in partner NHS trusts: rotations from cancer and haematology to child health, plus special study units in medical humanities, improving healthcare, teaching and research.
4Preparation for Medical Practice: longer placement blocks as a senior student, student assistantships, an elective in the UK or abroad, and the Medical Licensing Assessment.

Teaching is at the Kate Granger Building on the Surrey Research Park, which houses the Clinical Simulation Centre, and at the Centre for Anatomical and Surgical Education. Full human dissection is offered to some students as a special study unit, and every student is given an iPad for the course.

Placement partners include Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals, Frimley Health, Surrey and Borders Partnership, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare and the Royal Surrey. All are within commuting range, and Surrey reimburses travel costs above your normal commute to the university. A driving licence is not required but makes placements easier to reach.

Fees and eligibility

Fees, overseas applicants and the Dawson scholarships

Tuition fees for the 2027-28 academic year (course page)
Fee statusStandard year
UK£10,050
Overseas£50,300

Surrey's course page sets no residency restriction and lists an overseas fee. You need IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 7.0 in every component, or an accepted equivalent. The course page lists a 20% international alumni discount on tuition fees for this course; check the eligibility terms with Surrey.

The 2026 entry policy also describes two Dawson Scholarships for home students who attended a non-selective state school and meet at least two widening participation criteria, such as being care experienced, estranged, a young carer, or from an IMD quintile 1 area. Eligible offer holders are ranked on MMI score and the highest scorers attend a face-to-face panel interview for the awards.

Surrey does not take deferred entry applications through UCAS; the 2026 entry policy says offer holders may request a deferral, which is considered individually. Transfers from other medical schools are not accepted, and anyone who has previously started a medical degree cannot apply.

FAQs

Surrey graduate entry medicine: common questions

Can I use UCAT instead of GAMSAT for Surrey graduate entry medicine?

Only if your degree is in Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Science, Chemistry or Natural Sciences. Every other applicant must sit GAMSAT, and the 2026 entry policy required GAMSAT for joint honours degrees too.

Does Surrey graduate entry medicine accept non-science degrees?

Yes. Surrey accepts a 2:1 in any subject and says all academic disciplines are given equal consideration. Non-science graduates apply with GAMSAT.

Is the Surrey medicine interview online?

Yes. Surrey runs virtual interview events, and each applicant completes a multiple mini-interview cycle lasting under one hour. Dates for 2027 entry are still to be confirmed.

Can international students apply to Surrey graduate entry medicine?

Yes. International applicants are accepted, pay £50,300 a year for 2027-28, and need IELTS Academic 7.0 with at least 7.0 in every component.

What GAMSAT or UCAT score does Surrey need?

Surrey does not publish a cut-off. Test results are marked and placed into invite, waiting list or reject groups, depending on the field each year. Under the 2026 entry policy, UCAT applicants also needed SJT band 3 or above.

Is Surrey medical school accredited by the GMC?

Surrey is recognised by the GMC as a new school under review. Full approval comes when the first cohort graduates, and the University of Exeter is the contingency school if accreditation is delayed.
