The short answer

Sheffield graduate entry medicine, 2027 entry

Sheffield Graduate Entry Medicine (UCAS code A101) is a four-year MBChB open only to home applicants who meet two or more widening participation criteria and hold, or are predicted, a 2:1 in an approved life sciences degree, plus BBB at A-level including Chemistry or Biology and a UCAT score of at least 1800 out of 2700 for 2027 entry.

Sheffield lists the degrees it accepts and the degrees it rejects. Biomedical Science, Pharmacology, Physiotherapy and MPharm are on the accepted list; Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics, Psychology and Nursing are on the rejected list.

Sheffield ranks eligible applicants on UCAT, expects to interview 40 to 60 of them for 2027 entry, and fills 24 places from an in-person multiple mini-interview held between December 2026 and January 2027.

Eligibility

The widening participation rule: two criteria or no application

A101 exists for life science graduates from backgrounds that are under-represented in higher education. Sheffield will only consider you if you meet two or more of the criteria below, judged at the point you finished your A-levels (or equivalent) unless the criterion says otherwise.

  • You lived in an area in quintile 1 or 2 of the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (Sheffield has a postcode checker).
  • You are care experienced or a care leaver.
  • You were an unpaid carer.
  • You were estranged from your family.
  • You had parenting responsibilities for a child aged 17 or under.
  • You were entitled to Free School Meals in the six years before your final GCSE year.
  • You are a forced migrant (refugee status, humanitarian protection, limited leave after an asylum claim, or seeking asylum when you started your degree).
  • Your parents were unemployed or the main earner worked in a job the ONS classes as NS-SEC 4 to 8.
  • You received a 16-19 Bursary or Discretionary Learner Support with an income threshold of £25,000 or below.
  • You have a disability declared on your UCAS application.

A separate form, due 31 October 2026

After you apply, Sheffield sends A101 applicants a short form to show which criteria you meet. The 2027 entry timeline gives the deadline as 31 October 2026, just over two weeks after the UCAS deadline. Offer holders must provide supporting evidence at registration.

The course is closed to international applicants: the admissions policy states there are no places for overseas students. If you do not meet the widening participation rule, Sheffield's five-year A100 course is a separate UCAS choice, and graduates who meet its requirements can apply to it.

Degree subject

Which degrees Sheffield accepts, and which it does not

You need a 2:1 or first (achieved or predicted) in a life sciences subject that has given you a grounding in human anatomy and physiology. Sheffield publishes examples on both sides of the line. Neither list is exhaustive.

Masters degrees and PhDs are not considered when Sheffield decides whether you meet the academic requirement, so a later postgraduate degree will not make an excluded first degree eligible. If your subject is on neither list, Sheffield asks you to email medadmissions@sheffield.ac.uk with your transcript before you apply.

Final-year students can apply on a predicted 2:1. Applicants who have previously been unsuccessful in completing a medicine degree elsewhere are not considered.

School qualifications

A-levels still count: BBB with Chemistry or Biology

Sheffield sets an A-level bar as well as a degree bar. You need at least BBB, one of which must be Chemistry or Biology, and all three must have been taken in the same first sitting. GCSEs and AS levels are not considered, apart from English Language at grade 4/C as one route to the English requirement.

  • Resits are allowed: one resit per A-level, with all resits taken in the same sitting.
  • Further Mathematics, Critical Thinking and General Studies do not count towards the three.
  • If your pre-degree A-levels did not include Chemistry or Biology, a Chemistry or Biology A-level taken during or after your degree at grade B or above is accepted.
  • International Baccalaureate: 32 points with 5 in three Higher Level subjects including Chemistry or Biology.
  • English: GCSE English Language at 4/C, or IELTS 7.5 with at least 7.0 in each component.

Sheffield does not rank applicants on academic grades at this stage, so it says there is no advantage in exceeding the minimum.

Shortlisting

From 200 applications to 24 places: the UCAT threshold and ranking

  1. 1

    Three thresholds

Your application must pass the academic, UCAT and widening participation thresholds together. The UCAT minimum for 2027 entry is 1800/2700, set at the 40th centile of all test-takers for 2024, 2025 and 2026 entry. A high score cannot make up for a missed academic requirement, and good grades cannot make up for a low UCAT.

  2. 2

    UCAT ranking

If more applicants clear all three thresholds than can be interviewed, Sheffield ranks them on UCAT total. A101 applicants are ranked separately from A100 applicants. The admissions policy says applicants from Sheffield's own School of Biosciences are not ranked.

  3. 3

    Invitation to interview

Sheffield expects to invite 40 to 60 A101 applicants for 2027 entry. The personal statement and reference play no part in this decision.

  4. 4

    MMI and offer

Offers go to the strongest MMI performers, after a review of the UCAS reference. Decisions are released through UCAS in February and March 2027.

In the 2024-25 and 2025-26 cycles the A101 cut point was the same as the minimum threshold. The policy puts applications at approximately 200 a year. If you are still preparing for the test, our UCAT tutoring page sets out how we support applicants with the test.

Interview

The Sheffield MMI: eight stations, with the UCAT SJT as a ninth

Home applicants attend the multiple mini-interview in person. The admissions policy describes eight stations of about eight minutes each, and says station themes are sent to you when you confirm your booking.

How the MMI is scored (admissions page, 2027 entry)
ComponentScoring
Eight MMI sectionsEach marked 1 (unsatisfactory) to 5 (excellent)
UCAT Situational Judgement TestConverted to a mark out of 5 by quartile: 1st = 5, 2nd = 4, 3rd = 3, 4th = 2
TotalOut of 45, then ranked against all other A101 applicants
PriorityApplicants scoring 3 or better in every section and the SJT are prioritised

The admissions page lists the areas covered: knowledge of Sheffield, medicine in a wider context, good medical practice, attitudes and values, the candidate as a person, communication skills, ethics and information processing. Interviewers do not see your personal statement, although Sheffield says questions often touch on topics applicants write about. It suggests reading the NHS Constitution, NHS values and the GMC's guidance for medical students.

Because a score below 3 in any one section costs you priority in the ranking, it can help to rehearse every station type under time pressure. A mock MMI is one way to find a weak station before the day.

The course

Six weeks, then straight into phase two, and who pays the first-year fee

A101 students bypass the first year of the five-year A100 degree. After a six-week introduction you join phase two of the MBChB, which includes a research project, early General Practice placements, clinical attachments and student selected components. Phase two also includes a 12-week longitudinal hospital placement and a four-week social accountability placement with one of more than 130 community partners.

The later years cover specialty attachments, child health, women's health and mental health, longitudinal integrated clinical placements and a six-week student assistantship before foundation training. Placements are in hospitals and GP practices across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and the surrounding area, and you sit the Medical Licensing Assessment as part of the degree.

A101 students are expected to pay towards their tuition fees in year 1. The 2027-28 course page says alumni donors cover this self-funded element. From year 2 you are eligible for NHS funding: a bursary, a £1,000 grant, a reduced Maintenance Loan and a contribution towards tuition fees.

FAQs

Sheffield graduate entry medicine: common questions

Can I apply to Sheffield graduate entry medicine with a biology or biochemistry degree?

No. BSc Biology and BSc Biochemistry are both on Sheffield's list of degrees that do not meet the A101 requirement, along with Chemistry, Genetics, Psychology, Nursing and Zoology.

Degrees such as Biomedical Science, Physiology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience and Physiotherapy are accepted. If your subject is on neither list, email medadmissions@sheffield.ac.uk with your transcript before applying.

Do I have to meet widening participation criteria for Sheffield A101?

Yes. You must meet two or more of Sheffield's ten widening participation criteria, such as living in an IMD quintile 1 or 2 area, Free School Meals, being care experienced or being a carer.

You confirm this on a separate form, due by 31 October 2026 for 2027 entry, and offer holders must provide evidence at registration.

What UCAT score do I need for Sheffield graduate entry medicine?

The minimum is 1800 out of 2700 for 2027 entry. If more eligible applicants clear it than can be interviewed, Sheffield ranks them on UCAT total.

In the 2025-26 admissions cycle the A101 ranking cut point was 1800/2700, the same as the minimum. Earlier cycles were on the 3600 scale.

Can international students apply to Sheffield A101?

No. The course page states the route is not available to international students, and the admissions policy says there are no overseas places. International graduates could look at the five-year A100 course instead.

Does Sheffield read the personal statement for graduate entry medicine?

No. Sheffield does not normally read or score personal statements (it will read one flagged by UCAS as possibly plagiarised), and they play no part in who is invited to interview. MMI interviewers do not see it either, although the topics you write about may come up at interview.

When are Sheffield graduate entry medicine interviews?

Between December 2026 and January 2027 for 2027 entry. Home applicants attend a multiple mini-interview in person, and exact dates are sent with the invitation.

Can I apply to both Sheffield A100 and A101?

Yes, but they are separate UCAS choices. If you want to be considered for both, you must apply to each course.
