“Harry got my UCAT up to 2,590, working through the sections I kept dropping marks on week by week. Gemma then ran my interview practice so the MMI stations didn't catch me out, and Dr Akash mentored me the whole way through. I'm off to King's for Medicine.”

Swansea graduate entry medicine, 2027 entry
Swansea graduate entry medicine is the four-year MB BCh (UCAS code A101), and you need a 2:1 honours degree in any subject (or a Merit in an integrated master's, or a 2:2 plus a Masters or PhD), GCSE Maths and English or Welsh at grade C, and a GAMSAT or UCAT score, with MCAT also accepted from international applicants.
Swansea invites the highest-scoring applicants on each test to an assessment day early in the New Year, made up of three face-to-face stations of 20 or 30 minutes. Once you are shortlisted, Swansea considers your test score no further: any offer rests solely on your performance at interview.
Swansea describes the course as unique in Wales and one of a handful in the UK open to graduates of any discipline from the UK, EU and overseas. For a September 2027 start the first-year fee is £9,790 for UK students and £48,350 for international students.
Any degree subject, from anywhere: who can apply to Swansea GEM
Swansea describes its Graduate Entry Medicine programme as unique in Wales and one of a handful in the UK open to graduates of any discipline from the UK, EU and overseas. You need to hold, or be predicted, one of three academic routes.
| Route | What you need | Subject |
|---|---|---|
| Honours degree | 2:1 or above | Any subject |
| Integrated master's | Merit or above | Any subject |
| Lower second plus higher degree | 2:2 honours degree AND a pass in a Masters or PhD | Any subject |
- By the time you apply you must already hold GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English or Welsh at grade C or above, and have completed an admissions test.
- Predicted degree results are accepted, but pending results must be confirmed by 31 July of the year you start. Conditional offers are withdrawn if results are still outstanding after that date.
- A-levels are not scored, and clinical experience is not a formal requirement. The Medical Schools Council entry for this course describes work experience as a critical part of preparing for both interview and entry, and says interview questions assess motivation, insight and self-awareness.
- There is no fixed upper age limit. Swansea asks older applicants to think carefully about the length of training and the commitment that follows qualification.
If you are weighing Swansea against courses that restrict degree subject, the UK graduate entry medicine comparison sets the degree rules side by side.

GAMSAT, UCAT or MCAT: how Swansea sets its interview cut-off
Swansea runs three test routes in parallel. Home applicants choose GAMSAT or UCAT; international applicants may also use MCAT. The minimum scores below are the ones Swansea publishes for entry in 2026. They are the floor for being considered at all, and the score that actually earns an interview can be higher.
| Test | Who can use it | Minimum score considered (2026 entry) | Which sittings count |
|---|---|---|---|
| GAMSAT | Home and international | 50 overall and 50 in Paper 3 | The last four sittings before the UCAS October deadline |
| UCAT | Home and international | 1900 (Situational Judgement bands not considered) | Tests taken in the year of application |
| MCAT | International only | 500 | Within 24 calendar months of the closing date |
- A cut-score for interview is set each year from the number of applications received for each test, and it may sit above the published minimum.
- Interview slots are shared out in proportion to the number of applicants who took each test.
- If you have more than one test, Swansea considers one score only and asks you which when it acknowledges your application. If you do not reply, it uses your best GAMSAT from the four eligible sittings first, then your most recent UCAT, then (international applicants) your best MCAT.
- UCAT results arrive automatically with your UCAS application. GAMSAT and MCAT scores must be released to Swansea through the test providers' portals.
- Swansea will consider an application with results pending from a test sat before the UCAS October deadline, but a test planned for after that date cannot be used.
The 2026 minimums are not a 2027 promise
Swansea labels these thresholds for 2026 entry and sets the real interview cut-off after applications close. Treat 1900 on the UCAT (a 2025-onwards score out of 2700) and 50 on the GAMSAT as the lowest scores Swansea would look at, and aim well above them. Our GAMSAT guide explains how the sections are scored.

The Swansea assessment day: three longer stations, and the interview decides
Swansea selects in two stages. Your admissions test score decides whether you are invited to the assessment day, and once you are shortlisted it is considered no further.
- 1
Minimum requirements checked
Degree route, GCSEs and a valid admissions test. Swansea also asks every applicant to complete a Code of Professional Practice declaration after it receives the application.
- 2
Shortlist by test score
Applicants above the annual cut-off for their test are invited to the assessment day, held early in the New Year.
- 3
Three face-to-face stations
Each station lasts 20 or 30 minutes and may be an interview, a presentation or a role play. You may be questioned on your personal statement in one or more stations. Details of the day and anything to prepare are sent with the invitation.
- 4
Offers on interview performance alone
After the assessment day Swansea ranks overall performance, and only the highest-scoring candidates receive offers. Admissions test results are considered no further once you are shortlisted.
Stations are run by a trained panel of clinicians, academics, medical students and members of the public. Swansea lists the qualities it assesses as communication skills; problem solving; coping with pressure; insight and integrity; passion for medicine and resilience to succeed; organisation and research; and ethics and values. It reserves the right to change station formats between cycles without notice.
Because each station runs far longer than a typical multiple mini interview station, it may help to practise holding a 20-minute conversation or presentation under observation, for example through mock interviews.

Four years in Swansea: case-based learning, patients from the first term, and teaching in Welsh
The programme is built around how patients present to doctors. You gain clinical experience on placement from the first term, and on campus you learn through lectures and tutorials, case-based learning, integrated clinical methods, and anatomy and clinical skills sessions.
- Each year combines three strands: Doctor as Scholar and Scientist, Doctor as a Practitioner, and Doctor as a Professional.
- Clinical placements run at NHS sites including hospitals, GP surgeries and community health facilities.
- The Doctor as a Professional strand is offered in English or in Welsh (Meddyg fel Gweithiwr Proffesiynol), and Welsh speakers can study at least 40 credits of the course through the medium of Welsh.
- Research runs through the course, including Learning Opportunities in Research and Scholarship (LORS), audit and research projects.
- In Year 4 you sit the GMC's Medical Licensing Assessment alongside university finals.
Applicants with a PhD may also look at the Foulkes Foundation Fellowship, which Swansea signposts for this course.

Fees, deferral and the Swansea rules that catch applicants out
| Fee status | Year 1 fee | Later years |
|---|---|---|
| UK | £9,790 | May rise in line with the maximum fee set by the Welsh Government |
| International | £48,350 | Rises by 3% for each subsequent year of study |
- No deferred entry. Swansea does not accept deferred applications for this course. Offer holders may request deferral only in exceptional circumstances such as bereavement or serious ill-health, with evidence.
- No concurrent study. Any other degree programme must be finished before you enrol.
- Previous medical study. Transfers from another medical programme are not allowed, and applicants who left a medical degree through academic failure, fitness to practise or professionalism issues are not considered. Other reasons are looked at case by case.
- English language. Applicants from majority non-English speaking countries need IELTS 7.0 with at least 7.0 in speaking and 6.5 in listening, reading and writing. For this course, English-medium schooling, a degree from a British or English-medium university, or professional work in English do not count as proof.
- Checks after offer. Offers depend on an enhanced DBS check, occupational health clearance and a check of the Medical Schools Council Excluded Students Database.
Applications go through UCAS by the October deadline (15 October 2026 for 2027 entry), and Swansea has no facility for late or direct applications. If you want a second pair of eyes on your statement before then, see our personal statement help.

Swansea graduate entry medicine: common questions
Can I apply to Swansea graduate entry medicine with an arts or humanities degree?
Yes. Swansea accepts a 2:1 honours degree in any subject, and describes its programme as open to graduates of any discipline.
You still need GCSE Maths and English or Welsh at grade C and a GAMSAT or UCAT score.
Does Swansea GEM accept a 2:2?
Only with a postgraduate degree. A 2:2 honours degree qualifies if you also hold, or will complete, a pass in a Masters or PhD in any subject.
What UCAT score do I need for Swansea graduate entry medicine?
Swansea's published minimum for 2026 entry was a UCAT score of 1900, with Situational Judgement bands not considered.
The score that earns an interview is set each year from the number of applications and can be higher than the minimum. Only a UCAT taken in the year you apply counts.
What GAMSAT score does Swansea need?
For 2026 entry Swansea considered GAMSAT scores of at least 50 overall and 50 in Paper 3, from the last four sittings before the UCAS October deadline.
As with UCAT, the annual interview cut-off may be higher than this minimum.
Can international students apply to Swansea GEM?
Yes. International applicants can use GAMSAT, UCAT or MCAT (minimum 500 for 2026 entry). The first-year international fee for a September 2027 start is £48,350, rising 3% a year.
What is the Swansea graduate entry medicine interview like?
It is an assessment day early in the New Year with three face-to-face stations of 20 or 30 minutes each, which may be interviews, presentations or role plays.
Panels include clinicians, academics, medical students and members of the public, and you may be asked about your personal statement.
Does my test score count towards a Swansea offer?
No. Your GAMSAT, UCAT or MCAT score is used only to shortlist for interview. Swansea bases any offer solely on performance at the assessment day.
Can I defer entry to Swansea GEM?
No. Swansea does not accept deferred applications for this course and considers deferral requests from offer holders only in exceptional circumstances.
