“Harry got my UCAT up to 2,590, working through the sections I kept dropping marks on week by week. Gemma then ran my interview practice so the MMI stations didn't catch me out, and Dr Akash mentored me the whole way through. I'm off to King's for Medicine.”

Queen Mary graduate entry medicine, 2027 entry
Queen Mary graduate entry medicine is the four-year Graduate Entry Programme MBBS (UCAS code A101) at Barts and The London, and you need a 2:1 in a molecular or biomedical sciences degree (or a 2:1 in any other subject plus A level BB in Chemistry or Biology and a second science), a UCAT total in the fourth decile or above with SJT Band 1 to 3, and home fee status.
Queen Mary states there are 39 places for September 2027. For 2026 entry it received 725 applications, interviewed 127 and made 55 offers, with a UCAT cut-off for interview of 2130 on the new scale out of 2700.
Shortlisted applicants have an online panel interview between January and February, with two senior academic or clinical staff, a medical student and sometimes a lay selector. Decisions are communicated in March.
A biomedical degree, or any degree plus science A levels
Queen Mary accepts graduates from any subject, but what else you need depends on your degree. A 2:1 in a listed molecular or biomedical sciences degree needs nothing further. A 2:1 in any other subject needs science A levels as well.
| Route | Degree | Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Molecular or biomedical sciences | 2:1 in Biomedical Sciences, Biomedicine, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Genetics, Human Anatomy, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry or Pharmacy | No further qualifications required |
| Any other subject | 2:1 in any other degree subject | A level passes of at least BB in Chemistry or Biology plus one further science from Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Maths (or an accepted equivalent) |
- Predicted or achieved grades count at the first shortlisting, so final-year students can apply.
- Queen Mary cannot review transcripts before you apply; if your degree meets the criteria, it encourages you to apply.
- Graduates with a non-UK degree check its equivalence to a UK 2:1 against Queen Mary's postgraduate requirements for their region.
- If you need extra years or an interruption to reach the minimum academic requirements, the extenuating circumstances panel must approve this before you apply.

Three shortlists: the UCAT gate, the weighted score, then the offer
- 1
First shortlisting: minimum criteria
You must apply by 15 October, meet the academic requirements (predicted or achieved), sit the UCAT in the year you apply, score in the fourth decile or above overall, and have SJT Band 1 to 3. An application that misses any of these is rejected at this point, and a score above the fourth decile does not guarantee an interview.
- 2
Second shortlisting: selection for interview
Applicants are ranked on a weighted score against others applying in the same year, which may combine your UCAT score and a weighted score for your degree.
- 3
Third shortlisting: offers
After interview, Queen Mary may consider every assessment factor: interview score, situational judgement test, weighted degree score and UCAT score.
No UCAT exemptions
Queen Mary does not grant UCAT exemptions or waivers under any circumstances. If you cannot sit the UCAT, its advice is to reapply in the following cycle.
The fourth decile is only the entry gate: for 2026 entry it sat at 1761, while the interview cut-off was 2130. Because SJT Band 4 also ends an application at the first shortlisting, it is worth preparing for the situational judgement section as well as the cognitive subtests, for example with UCAT tutoring.

How competitive Barts A101 has been: 2024 to 2026 entry
| Year of entry | Applications | Interviews | Offers | UCAT cut-off for interview |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 828 | 133 | 56 | 2820 (out of 3600) |
| 2025 | 580 | 127 | 55 | 2790 (out of 3600) |
| 2026 | 725 | 127 | 55 | 2130 (out of 2700) |
The 2026 figure is on the new UCAT scale after Abstract Reasoning was withdrawn in 2025, so it cannot be compared directly with the earlier two. Queen Mary's minimum UCAT threshold (the fourth decile) was 1761 for 2026 entry. It says thresholds for a future year cannot be predicted from past data.
In each of the three years fewer than one in four applicants was interviewed, and 55 or 56 offers were made each year; the statistics page gives the number of places as 39. Queen Mary has not published 2027 thresholds.

A panel interview online, held in January and February
Queen Mary's graduate entry interview is a panel, held online. Panels typically include two senior academic or clinical staff, a medical student and sometimes a lay selector, and the panel has access to your UCAS application and may ask about anything in it.
- Motivation and the reality of a career in medicine
- Initiative, resilience and maturity
- Teamwork
- Organisation and problem-solving abilities
- Contribution to university life
- Communication skills
Your personal statement is not scored before, during or after the interview, but the panel can question you on it, so it helps if everything in it is something you can discuss in depth. Queen Mary also expects people-focused experience of providing care or service before you apply, and the interview explores your understanding of a medical career. Panel practice with interview coaching suits this format.
There are three possible outcomes: an offer, a rejection or a place on the waiting list, which may be reconsidered after summer examination results. Decisions are communicated in March, once all interviews are complete. The UK medical school interview dates table sets Queen Mary's window alongside other schools.

A campus-based first year, then placements across east London and Essex
- Year 1 (Phase 1): seven campus-based modules, including Digestion, Metabolism and Growth, Infection and Immunity, Human Sciences and Public Health, taught through lectures, anatomy and physiology practicals and team-based learning. Every Thursday is spent in a practice setting or learning clinical skills, with groups of eight working with a GP tutor fortnightly.
- Years 2 and 3 (Phase 2): you join students from Year 2 of the five-year course to form a new Year 3 cohort, rotating through partner trusts on placements of about 6 to 10 weeks.
- Placements: inner-city sites such as the Royal London, Homerton, Newham and Whipps Cross hospitals, and out-firms at Southend, Colchester and Princess Alexandra hospitals, where most students stay in hospital accommodation.
- Year 4 (Phase 3): emergency medicine, intensive care, surgery and anaesthetics, a six-week GP apprenticeship, a six-week self-funded elective and three weeks shadowing a Foundation Year 1 doctor.
On funding, Queen Mary's course page says home students self-fund the first £3,465 of tuition fees in Year 1, and receive a £3,465 bursary from the NHS in later years, with Student Finance England loans covering the balance and living costs. The 2027 home fee had not been published when this page was checked.
