Introduction

Everything you need to know about applying to the UK to study medicine in 2025 from Singapore as an international student. This includes information on the UCAT in Singapore and UCAT tutoring in Singapore.

The UK is home to many world-class medical schools, making it an ideal destination for prospective medical students looking to study abroad from Singapore.

Additionally, most UK universities make the process of applying from Singapore very easy, detailing their specific Singapore related entry requirements online. In this guide, we detail some of the key considerations that you should make throughout the process of applying to study Medicine abroad in the UK.

You should also check out our in-depth guide on applying to study Medicine in the UK as an international student. This page is designed with information specific to Singapore to supplement that general, more in-depth walkthrough of the application process.

Applying to UK Medicine from Singapore: Key Takeaways

  • SMC Recognition is Essential: Your top priority should be choosing a UK medical school from the official Singapore Medical Council (SMC) approved list.

  • UCAT is the Key Exam: With the BMAT cancelled, the UCAT is the only admissions test you need. Specialist UCAT preparation is critical for a competitive score.

  • Entry Requirements: Typical offers for Singapore A-Level students are AAA in H2 Chemistry, Biology, and one other subject. For IB, expect offers of 38-42 points.

  • Leverage Your Background: Use your unique experiences, such as National Service or familiarity with Singapore's healthcare system, to stand out in your personal statement and interviews.

🏫

UK Entry Requirements for Singapore Students (A-Levels & IB)

UK medical schools hold Singaporean qualifications in high regard. Here are the typical entry requirements:

  • Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Levels: Applicants are usually required to achieve AAA in three H2 subjects. Chemistry and Biology are almost always mandatory.

  • International Baccalaureate (IB): A typical offer ranges from 38 to 42 points overall, with a 7, 6, 6 in Higher Level subjects, including Chemistry and Biology.

  • Polytechnic Diplomas: Entry via a diploma is less common and more competitive. Applicants usually need a near-perfect GPA in a relevant science or health diploma and should contact universities directly to check eligibility.

UCAT in Singapore 2025

If you are applying to any medical school in the UK, you will be required to sit the UCAT. Fortunately, there are testing centres for both of these in Singapore.

The UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) is often a major challenge for Singaporean students, even those with perfect A-Level or IB scores. The test's intense time pressure and abstract reasoning style are very different from the Singaporean curriculum.

Success in sections like Verbal Reasoning and Decision Making requires specific techniques and strategies, not just academic knowledge. This is why targeted UCAT preparation is a crucial component of a successful application.

Expert UCAT Tutoring for Singapore Students

While you can search for a general UCAT course in Singapore, the most effective strategy is one-to-one online UCAT tutoring with UK-based medical experts.

A dedicated UCAT tutor can create a personalised plan to master every section, including the Situational Judgement Test (SJT), and provide proven time-management techniques.

Our tutors are all high-scoring UK medical students and doctors who understand precisely what admissions tutors are looking for.

The BMAT was an exam that was previously used for entry to some UK Medical schools - however, the BMAT has been cancelled from 2024 onwards

If you are looking for some extra help with the UCAT, then check out our guides or the packages of expert 1-1 tutoring that we offer here at TheUKCATPeople.

Medical interviews in Singapore 2025

Another consideration when applying from Singapore will be your medicine interviews. As a student from Singapore, you have a unique perspective on how medicine works in the UK as you are viewing it externally.

Most UK medical schools use the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format. As a Singaporean applicant, you have a unique background you can draw upon.

For instance, many applicants have completed National Service (NS), which provides incredible examples of teamwork, discipline, and resilience - all key attributes sought by medical schools.

You can also thoughtfully compare your understanding of Singapore's healthcare system (e.g., Medisave, Medishield Life) with the principles of the UK's NHS to demonstrate a mature, global perspective.

You will be expected to have an understanding of medicine in the UK in your interviews, so should be prepared to demonstrate this. In particular, you should research the NHS: how it works, what its core values are, and what the key challenges that it will face moving into the future are.

You should also make a habit of reading through UK healthcare news - even spending 5-10 minutes each day on the health section of BBC News or Sky News. This will help you to get used to how healthcare works in the UK.

Many universities are currently offering online interviews, and some also offer interviews in Singapore - such as Bart’s Medical School and the University of Manchester

Some will require you to fly to the UK for an in-person medicine interview, but many more are now becoming virtual online interviews however. You can check out the specific details of each medical school on their individual websites.

Other information on applying to study medicine from Singapore

Another important consideration when applying from Singapore is that, depending on your passport/visa status, you may have to sit the UKVI IELTS.

This is an English-language exam that is required for you to demonstrate sufficient competency both for universities and to get a visa here.

There are plenty of testing centres in Singapore, including in universities and schools, so you should have no trouble booking and taking this exam.

The IELTS is quite straightforward if you have a good understanding of the English language from your schooling, and is very unlikely to require extensive preparation. It can last up to 2 hours and 45 minutes.

It is important to recognise that a MBBS degree in the UK is recognised from some institutions which can be found in the batches - these include Oxford, Cambridge Imperial, Manchester etc.

This means that you can apply here in addition to the four UCAS choices that you make.

List of Recognised UK Medical Schools To Work In Singapore (2025 Updates)

If you’re based in Singapore and looking to pursue a medical degree in the UK, it’s essential to know which universities and qualifications are recognised by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC).

For students from Singapore, selecting a UK medical school is not just about rankings; it's about ensuring your future career path. Graduating from a university on the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) approved universities list is essential if you plan to return to practice in Singapore.

The SMC maintains a list of recognised overseas medical schools, and a degree from one of these institutions allows you to apply for registration without sitting the local licensing examinations. This is the most direct pathway to becoming a doctor in Singapore after your UK studies. Choosing a non-recognised school will create significant hurdles for your career back home.

Below is a detailed list of UK medical schools whose qualifications have been officially recognised over the years. Each named institution and its corresponding primary qualifications are widely respected, offering a blend of rigorous academic training, comprehensive clinical exposure, and strong global reputations.

By choosing an approved university, you can confidently invest in an education that not only broadens your horizons but also aligns with the standards and requirements of practicing medicine in Singapore.

Singapore to UK Medicine: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which UK medical schools are recognised in Singapore?

The Singapore Medical Council (SMC) recognises degrees from numerous top UK universities, including Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College London, UCL, Edinburgh, and many more. It is essential to choose a university from the official SMC approved medical schools list if you plan to practice in Singapore.

What is the best way to prepare for the UCAT in Singapore?

The most effective method is specialist one-to-one online UCAT tutoring. A dedicated UCAT tutor for Singapore students can provide a personalised plan and flexible scheduling, which is more effective than a generic, local UCAT course.

How hard is it to get into UK medical schools from Singapore?

Competition is fierce, but Singaporean students are very successful applicants due to the high calibre of A-Level and IB qualifications. A strong application depends on excellent grades, a high UCAT score, relevant work experience, and a polished interview performance.

Do UK medical schools accept Singapore A-Levels?

Yes, the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level is a highly respected qualification. A typical offer is AAA at the H2 level, with Chemistry and Biology as required subjects.

Where are the UCAT test centres in Singapore?

You must sit the UCAT in person at an official Pearson VUE test centre. In Singapore, the main centre is the Pearson Professional Center located at 10 Anson Road. Book your test slot early as places fill up very quickly.

Can I use my National Service (NS) experience in my application?

Absolutely. NS provides outstanding examples of maturity, discipline, teamwork, and leadership under pressure. Reflecting on these experiences in your personal statement and interviews can significantly strengthen your application.

Do I need an admissions consultant to apply from Singapore?

While some students use general agents, it's more effective to work with specialists who are actual UK doctors and medical students. They provide authentic, first-hand guidance on the UCAT and interviews that a general consultant cannot.

What is a good UCAT score for a Singaporean applicant?

To be a competitive applicant at most UK medical schools, you should aim for a UCAT score in the 700-750 (ideally more) range on average, or a total score of 2100+. For top-tier universities, a score of 2200+ is often required.

Will I need to take the IELTS exam?

Most likely, yes. The UKVI Academic IELTS is often a mandatory requirement for both your university offer and your student visa, even if English is your first language.

Are there scholarships for Singaporean students?

Medical school scholarships for international students are extremely rare and highly competitive. You should plan to be fully self-funded for your tuition fees and living costs.
