Month by month from January to your test, for 2028 entry: key dates, section strategies and a mock review log.
The UCAT, the MCAT and the GAMSAT are admissions tests for different routes into medicine, so most applicants only ever need one of them. Which one you sit depends on where you want to study and whether you already have a degree. Checked against ucat.ac.uk, aamc.org and gamsat.acer.org on 24 October 2026.
The UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) is a two-hour aptitude test for UK medicine and dentistry that needs no science knowledge. The MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) is a seven-and-a-half-hour science and reasoning exam for US and Canadian medical schools. The GAMSAT (Graduate Medical School Admissions Test) is a graduate-entry test with essays and science, used in the UK, Ireland and Australia.
UCAT | MCAT | GAMSAT | |

How long results last | One UCAS cycle: entry the following year, or deferred entry a year later | Schools generally accept scores from the last two or three years | Two consecutive years in the UK and Ireland; up to four in Australia |
How often you can sit it | Once per year | 3 times a year, 4 times in two years, 7 times in a lifetime | No limit |
For the UCAT itself in more detail, see what the UCAT is and how it works. Abstract Reasoning was removed from the UCAT in 2025, which is why totals now run to 2700, not 3600.
Neither is simply harder: they are hard in different ways. The MCAT tests a large body of university-level science over a full day, while the UCAT tests reasoning speed over two hours with no science content at all.
For a section-by-section view of what makes the UCAT difficult, read how hard the UCAT is and which section is hardest.
Aiming for a top-decile UCAT score?
The GAMSAT is longer and asks for more: two timed essays and science reasoning at first-year university level, against the UCAT's two hours of reasoning with no essays and no science. It is designed for graduates; the UCAT is the test UK school leavers sit.
If you are a graduate weighing the two, our GAMSAT overview shows which UK graduate-entry courses ask for each test.

Applying to UK medicine or dentistry from school, you need the UCAT. Applying as a graduate, you need the UCAT or the GAMSAT depending on the course. Applying to US or Canadian medical schools, you need the MCAT.
Your route | Test you need | Notes |
|---|---|---|
UK school leaver, medicine or dentistry | UCAT | Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and UCL are all on the UCAT Consortium's list for 2027 entry |
UK graduate, four-year graduate-entry medicine | UCAT or GAMSAT, by course | Chester and Worcester also accept the MCAT; Swansea accepts it from international applicants |
UK graduate, standard five- or six-year course | Usually the UCAT | Exeter and Plymouth rank graduate applicants on the GAMSAT |
Ireland, graduate entry | GAMSAT | RCSI, UCC, UCD and Limerick, applied for through the CAO |
Australia, graduate-entry MD | GAMSAT | Some schools take the MCAT from international applicants living overseas, such as Melbourne |
Australia or New Zealand, school leaver | UCAT ANZ | A separate sitting of the UCAT: see below |
Singapore MBBS (NUS, NTU) | UCAT | Duke-NUS graduate entry uses the MCAT or GAMSAT |
USA or Canada, MD | MCAT | Required by all US and many Canadian medical schools |
Graduates should read our graduate entry medicine overview, and anyone applying from abroad can check the universities that accept the UCAT outside the UK and our guide to UCAT requirements for NUS and NTU.
Only for a few graduate-entry courses. Standard five- and six-year courses at UCAT Consortium universities ask for the UCAT, not the MCAT. As of 24 October 2026, three UK graduate-entry courses list the MCAT on their own pages.
Course | Tests accepted | What the university says about the MCAT |
|---|---|---|
Chester Graduate Entry Medicine (A101) | UCAT, GAMSAT or MCAT | A minimum threshold in one of the three, set above the national mean and changed each year; no figure published |
Worcester Graduate Entry Medicine (A101) | UCAT, GAMSAT or MCAT | No hard cut-off; it depends on the spread of all applicants that year |
Swansea Graduate Entry Medicine (A101) | Home: GAMSAT or UCAT. International: GAMSAT, UCAT or MCAT | International applicants only; minimum 500 for 2026 entry; test within 24 months of the closing date |
Read the full requirements for Chester graduate entry medicine, Worcester graduate entry medicine and Swansea graduate entry medicine. If you are a US or Canadian student without a degree, you sit the UCAT like any other applicant: see studying medicine in the UK from the USA and from Canada.
The BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test) no longer exists. It was last sat in autumn 2023 by applicants for 2024 entry, and Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing, which ran it, no longer delivers any tests. Cambridge and Imperial moved to the UCAT from the 2024 application cycle, and Oxford, UCL, Leeds, Lancaster and Brighton and Sussex, which also used the BMAT, are all on the UCAT list for 2027 entry.
From diagnostic to test day: a structured plan with 1-1 expert support at every stage.
Why it was withdrawn and what changed for each school is in BMAT cancelled: what to sit instead.
The UCAT ANZ is the same test, identical in content, sat on an earlier timetable for universities in Australia and New Zealand, which accept only UCAT ANZ results. UK universities accept a UCAT ANZ result, so if you are applying to both, sit the UCAT ANZ; you may not sit both in the same year. The details are in UCAT ANZ vs UCAT UK.
For context on UCAT scores, the 2026 mean was 1918 out of 2700 across 42,359 tests: see what counts as a good UCAT score.
Checked against ucat.ac.uk, aamc.org and gamsat.acer.org on 24 October 2026. UCAT had not published 2027 test dates as of that day; it says instructions for the UCAT 2027 will follow in March 2027. GAMSAT registrations for March 2027 open in November 2026.

Yes. The UKCAT (UK Clinical Aptitude Test) was renamed the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) in January 2019, when universities in Australia and New Zealand adopted it. The content did not change with the name. The test has changed since: Abstract Reasoning was removed in 2025, so totals now run from 900 to 2700. UCAT's own website still names the UKCAT Consortium in places.
UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the system you apply through to UK universities. The UCAT is an admissions test you sit separately, at a Pearson VUE test centre, before you apply. For 2027 entry, the UCAT ran from 13 July to 24 September 2026 and the UCAS medicine deadline was 15 October 2026. UCAT sends your result straight to the UK universities you applied to in early November, so you do not add it to your UCAS application.
No. The UCAT is a two-hour aptitude test for UK medicine and dentistry, scored 900 to 2700, with no science content. The MCAT is the AAMC's science and reasoning exam for US and Canadian medical schools, about seven and a half hours seated and scored 472 to 528. A UCAT score cannot replace an MCAT for a US medical school, and UCAT Consortium universities ask for the UCAT, not the MCAT, for undergraduate medicine.
Yes. The AAMC lists the United Kingdom as an international MCAT location, with 2027 dates from 15 January to 3 September. Outside the US, Canada and US territories you pay a US$130 international fee on top of the US$360 registration fee. You only need the MCAT for US or Canadian medical schools or the few graduate-entry courses elsewhere that accept it.
The UCAT can be sat once a year; sitting it twice, or sitting both the UCAT and UCAT ANZ in one year, is misconduct, but there is no penalty for sitting again in a later year. The MCAT allows three attempts in a testing year, four over two consecutive years and seven in a lifetime. ACER sets no limit on GAMSAT sittings, which run in March and September.
No. The UCAT tests Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning and Situational Judgement, and none of them tests science; in Verbal Reasoning, UCAT tells you not to use prior knowledge at all. That is the main difference from the MCAT and the GAMSAT, which both test biology, chemistry and physics. You still need sound mental arithmetic for Quantitative Reasoning, and you have an on-screen calculator.
Yes. The UCAT's once-a-year rule covers only the UCAT and the UCAT ANZ, and ACER sets no limit on GAMSAT sittings, so graduates sometimes sit both to widen their choice of courses. A UCAT result lasts one cycle while a GAMSAT result lasts two years in the UK, and some courses that accept both will only consider one score, so check each school before booking.

Ultimate Package students from our 2025/26 cycle, with their UCAT scores and offers, who trained with us for the UCAT, personal statements and interviews.
“Harry got my UCAT up to 2,590, working through the sections I kept dropping marks on week by week. Gemma then ran my interview practice so the MMI stations didn't catch me out, and Dr Akash mentored me the whole way through. I'm off to King's for Medicine.”
“The interview prep was the part that actually moved the needle. Proper mock MMIs, not just lists of questions, and feedback that was honest about what I was getting wrong. I ended up with four offers and firmed UCL.”
“The Ultimate Package kept me organised from UCAT through to interviews. They knew what dental schools actually ask and tightened up my personal statement. Four offers in the end, and I'm going to Birmingham.”
“Vet applications come down to the written SAQs as much as the interview. Dr Rebecca went through my SAQs line by line, sharpened my answers and prepped me for the panels. I came away with four offers and chose the RVC.”
