GAMSAT at a glance

What is the GAMSAT and how is it scored?

The fast answers most candidates ask before booking tutoring. Sources: ACER (test owner) and individual UK and Irish graduate-medicine schools.

What is the GAMSAT
The Graduate Medical School Admissions Test is the standardised exam used to apply for graduate-entry medicine and dentistry in the UK, Ireland and Australia. It is owned and produced by ACER, the Australian Council for Educational Research.
GAMSAT format
Three sections sat in one day. Section 1: reasoning in humanities and social sciences (47 MCQs, 70 minutes including reading). Section 2: written communication (2 essays, 65 minutes including reading). Section 3: reasoning in the biological and physical sciences (75 MCQs, 150 minutes including reading).
When the GAMSAT is held
Twice every year: a March sitting (UK applicants register from October the previous year) and a September sitting (registration opens around May). UK and Ireland candidates sit a digital paper at PearsonVUE test centres.
GAMSAT cost in the UK
Standard UK registration is around £278 (2026 cycle); late registration adds roughly £80. Australia and Ireland fees are set in local currency by ACER. Check the ACER fees page on the official site before you book.
How GAMSAT is scored
Each section is scored on a scaled 0 to 100. The Overall Score is calculated as 1×S1 + 1×S2 + 2×S3, divided by 4. Most UK graduate medicine schools want an Overall Score above 60 to 65 with no section below 50.
How long to prepare
Most successful candidates prepare for three to six months part-time. Science graduates need the least Section 3 refresh; non-science graduates typically need eight to twelve weeks on chemistry, biology and physics before timed practice begins.
Section by section

How our GAMSAT tutors cover Section 1, 2 and 3

Section 3 is worth half the Overall Score and is the section we are most often booked to teach. Every section has its own technique stack: we coach all three.

Section 1 - Reasoning in Humanities and Social Sciences

Comprehension, inference and interpretation across prose, poetry, cartoons and infographics.

Question count
47 multiple choice questions across 10 to 12 stimulus units
Time
70 minutes including reading time
Weighting
25% of the GAMSAT Overall Score

What your tutor will cover

  • Active reading frameworks to lift comprehension speed
  • Inference vs assumption: the most-missed question type
  • Tone, register and bias detection in unfamiliar texts
  • Poetry and cartoon interpretation under exam pressure
  • Timed unit drills so you never run out of time on the final units

Section 2 - Written Communication

Two essays, 30 minutes each, marked on thought and content, organisation and expression.

Question count
2 essays from quote-based prompts (one argumentative, one reflective)
Time
65 minutes including reading time
Weighting
25% of the GAMSAT Overall Score

What your tutor will cover

  • Quote interpretation: extracting a defensible thesis in under three minutes
  • ACER marking criteria broken down into a section-by-section rubric
  • Argumentative essay structure that scores in the top quartile
  • Reflective essay voice without slipping into diary writing
  • Two essays marked per cycle (more on the 15-hour package) with line-by-line feedback

Section 3 - Reasoning in the Biological and Physical Sciences

The heaviest-weighted section: A-level biology, chemistry, physics and graph interpretation under tight time pressure.

Question count
75 multiple choice questions across 25 to 30 stimulus units
Time
150 minutes including reading time
Weighting
50% of the GAMSAT Overall Score (worth twice S1 or S2)

What your tutor will cover

  • First-principles chemistry: organic mechanisms, equilibria and acid-base
  • Core physics: mechanics, electricity, waves and unit analysis
  • Biology applied to novel stimuli (not rote recall)
  • Graph, table and structure interpretation drills
  • Section 3 timing: 2 minutes per question is brutal, we teach the skip rules

Who we tutor

GAMSAT tutoring for every background

From biomed graduates targeting an Overall above 70 to humanities graduates rebuilding Section 3 from first principles.

Science graduates

Biology, biomedical science, pharmacology, neuroscience and other life-science graduates. We focus your time on Section 1 comprehension, Section 2 essay technique and Section 3 chemistry and physics, where life-science degrees leave the biggest gaps.

Non-science graduates

Humanities, business, law and arts graduates routinely score well on the GAMSAT with the right plan. We rebuild Section 3 from first principles: A-level biology, chemistry and physics taught in plain English by a clinician.

Resitters

If you have already sat the GAMSAT, your first session is a section-by-section breakdown of what cost you marks. We rebuild the bottom-scoring section first so the Overall lift is maximised.

International applicants

We tutor GAMSAT candidates in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UAE and across Europe. Sessions run on your time zone, with full familiarity of UK and Irish GEM admissions criteria.

Dentistry applicants

GAMSAT is used by graduate-entry dentistry programmes in Australia and Ireland. We coach dental applicants on the same Section 1-3 strategy, with extra Section 3 chemistry tuned to dental-school weighting.

Foundation doctors and dental graduates

Sessions flex around night shifts and on-calls. We have tutored consultants, FY1s and current dental graduates moving into medicine: we know what life on the rota looks like.

GAMSAT tips and study advice

Top GAMSAT tips from our top-decile tutors

What our highest-scoring GAMSAT tutors wish they had known earlier. Use these to sharpen your study before (or alongside) tuition.

  1. 1

Treat Section 3 like a timing test, not a content test

Section 3 is 75 questions in 150 minutes (2 minutes a question). Most candidates fail by spending 4 minutes on the wrong question, not by missing content. Drill the 'skip and return' rule from week one.

  2. 2

Mark every Section 2 essay against ACER's three criteria

Thought and Content, Organisation, Expression. Marking yourself by 'does this feel good' is the single biggest mistake. We give every essay a scaled mark on each criterion.

  3. 3

Drill Section 1 inference, not reading speed

Section 1 is not a reading test. It is an inference and assumption test. Read less. Reason more. Three carefully chosen unit drills a week beats brute repetition.

  4. 4

    Non-science graduates: rebuild chemistry first

Chemistry is the highest-yield Section 3 sub-topic. Spend the first 4 weeks on organic mechanisms, equilibria and acid-base before touching physics or biology.

  5. 5

Sit a timed mock at least four weeks out

Do not save your first timed mock for the final week. You need time to debrief the patterns and rebuild the weakest section. The 10-hour course schedules this as standard.

  6. 6

Use the official ACER prep materials sparingly and last

ACER materials are gold but limited. Burn them in week two and you have nothing under realistic conditions later. Save Practice Test 1 and 2 for your final three weeks.

  7. 7

Apply for the September sitting if you have a choice

September results land before most UK GEM application deadlines so your file looks stronger. March sittings work but leave less margin.

  8. 8

Get your essays marked by a top-decile scorer, not a generalist

Essay marking quality is the single biggest predictor of Section 2 improvement. Generic A-level English tutors do not lift GAMSAT essay scores.

Your GAMSAT questions answered

GAMSAT tutoring FAQs

Are your GAMSAT tutors actually GAMSAT tutors, or repurposed A-level tutors?

Every GAMSAT tutor on our team has personally sat the GAMSAT and scored in the top decile. None of our GAMSAT tutoring is delivered by general A-level tutors learning the exam on the job.

Section 3 is taught by tutors who sat S3 themselves, not by chemistry tutors who have not seen an ACER paper. Section 2 is marked by tutors trained on ACER's marking rubric, not on UK essay conventions.

How many hours of GAMSAT tutoring do I need?

Most students take 10 hours, which is enough to cover all three sections, mark two essays and review at least one timed mock. Non-science graduates often go to 15 hours so we can rebuild Section 3 chemistry, biology and physics from first principles.

Five hours is best as a targeted top-up: for instance if you are strong on Section 1 and 3 but want focused Section 2 marking, or if you sat the GAMSAT before and need to fix one section.

What does GAMSAT tutoring cost in the UK?

Our 1-1 GAMSAT tutoring starts at £399 for five hours (£80/hour), £749 for ten hours (£75/hour) and £999 for fifteen hours (£67/hour). All packages include essay marking, a written revision plan and WhatsApp access to your tutor.

There are no hidden fees. The price covers your lessons, your plan, your essay marking and your mock debriefs.

Is GAMSAT coaching online or in person?

All of our GAMSAT coaching is online. Sessions run on Zoom or Google Meet with screen-share, a shared whiteboard for Section 3 working, and recorded notes you keep after the lesson.

Online means we can match you with the right GAMSAT specialist regardless of location, instead of restricting you to whoever happens to live near you. Most of our top GAMSAT tutors are not in London.

Are you the best GAMSAT tutors in the UK?

We are confident that the top-decile-GAMSAT-only hiring policy, doctor-led mentoring, ACER-aligned essay marking and money-back guarantee put us at the top of the UK market. We have over 550 five-star reviews and have helped students into graduate medicine across the UK, Ireland and Australia since 2012.

We would rather earn your trust on a free 15-minute strategy call than make broader claims. Book the call and judge for yourself.

Do you offer a GAMSAT course as well as tutoring?

Our model is 1-1 tutoring rather than a fixed group course, because the GAMSAT punishes generic preparation. Section 3 needs are very different for a biomed graduate vs a history graduate, and Section 2 essays only improve when they are individually marked.

If you want course-style structure plus 1-1, the 10-hour and 15-hour packages give you a written, week-by-week plan that mirrors a structured GAMSAT course.

Do you tutor for Section 3 specifically?

Yes. Section 3 is the heaviest-weighted section (50% of the Overall) and is the section we are most often booked to teach. Our Section 3 tutors are scientists or doctors who scored 70+ in S3.

We rebuild the chemistry first (organic mechanisms, equilibria, acid-base, thermodynamics), then physics (mechanics, electricity, waves) and finally biology applied to novel stimuli. Then we drill timing.

Do you tutor for Section 2 essay writing?

Yes. Section 2 is two essays marked against ACER's three criteria: Thought and Content, Organisation, and Expression. We teach a structure that consistently scores in the top quartile and mark each submitted essay line-by-line.

The 10-hour package includes two marked essays; the 15-hour package includes up to four. Extra essays beyond the package can be marked at the same per-hour rate.

Do you tutor for Section 1?

Yes. Section 1 catches strong applicants out because the questions test inference, not recall. We teach the active-reading framework, the inference vs assumption distinction, and run timed unit drills.

Section 1 prep tends to need fewer hours than Section 3 but more than students expect. A typical 10-hour package allocates 2 to 3 hours to Section 1, with daily practice between sessions.

Do you offer GAMSAT preparation for non-science graduates?

Yes, and it is the case we plan around most carefully. Non-science graduates can score very well on the GAMSAT, but Section 3 needs to be rebuilt from A-level foundations.

We typically recommend 15 hours for non-science graduates: 8 to 10 hours on Section 3 sciences, 3 to 4 on Section 2 essay marking and 2 on Section 1 strategy.

Do you tutor the GAMSAT in Australia, Ireland and internationally?

Yes. We tutor GAMSAT candidates in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE, India, Malaysia and across Europe. All sessions are online and we match the lesson time to your local time zone.

Australian applicants typically prep across both March and September sittings; Irish applicants use the September UK sitting (and sometimes the March one) to apply through the CAO graduate-medicine route.

Which cities in the UK do you tutor GAMSAT in?

Because lessons are online we cover every city: GAMSAT tutors in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Nottingham, Oxford, Cambridge, Reading, Chelmsford and elsewhere.

Going online means you are matched on quality of GAMSAT tutor rather than postcode. The best GAMSAT tutors in the UK are not all in London.

How do you assign a GAMSAT tutor to me?

On your free strategy call we ask about your degree background, target schools, test date and any prior GAMSAT score. We then assign a GAMSAT tutor whose own background and teaching style is the strongest match.

If the match is not right after the first session, we rematch you free of charge and refund the remaining hours if you prefer.

How long should I prepare for the GAMSAT?

Three to six months for most candidates. Science graduates aiming for an Overall above 65 typically need three to four months of part-time prep. Non-science graduates need closer to six months, with the first eight to twelve weeks spent on Section 3 content before timed practice begins.

We build your tutoring plan around the time you actually have, not a generic schedule.

What GAMSAT score do I need for UK graduate medicine?

Most UK graduate-entry medicine schools want an Overall Score of 60 to 65 with no individual section below 50. Competitive applicants typically present 65 to 70+.

Cut-offs move year to year, so use them as a target rather than a guarantee. We will share each school's most recent published GAMSAT threshold on your free strategy call.

When should I sit the GAMSAT?

The GAMSAT runs in March and September each year. UK applicants for graduate-entry medicine starting the following September can use either sitting, but many schools prefer (or require) the most recent sitting.

If your degree is finishing in June, the March GAMSAT is usually the best balance: it gives you time to apply that October without your score expiring.

What happens if I have GAMSAT tutoring hours left over?

All hours are transferable. Unused GAMSAT tutoring hours can be moved to UCAT tutoring, BMAT tutoring, personal statement reviews or medicine and dental interview tutoring at no extra cost.

Hours stay valid for 12 months from purchase.

Do you offer free GAMSAT support or just paid tutoring?

We offer a free 15-minute GAMSAT strategy call with a doctor or dentist. On it we map your sections of strength and weakness, recommend an honest number of hours and answer any GAMSAT or graduate-medicine questions.

Free strategy calls are limited to genuine applicants, not a sales pitch. If you do not need tutoring we will tell you so.

Do you offer GAMSAT essay marking on its own?

Yes. If you have already done your prep and just need expert eyes on your Section 2 essays, our five-hour package can be used entirely for essay marking and feedback sessions.

Each essay is marked against ACER's three criteria with line-by-line edits and a written rubric showing how to lift your band.

Can I combine GAMSAT tutoring with UCAT or interview support?

Yes. Many of our students apply to graduate medicine through both GAMSAT and UCAT routes and need help across both exams plus personal statement and interview. Our Ultimate Package bundles all of this in one mentor-led plan.

On your strategy call we will recommend either pure GAMSAT tutoring or the full Ultimate Package depending on the routes you are taking.

Do you offer a GAMSAT preparation course in the UK?

Yes. Our 10-hour and 15-hour packages are run as structured GAMSAT preparation courses (UK), delivered fully online. Each course follows a written week-by-week plan covering Section 1, 2 and 3, with marked essays, mock papers and a test-day rehearsal.

Both courses are private 1-1, not group classes. That is deliberate: GAMSAT preparation courses run in groups cannot rebuild Section 3 chemistry for a humanities graduate at the same pace as a biomed graduate.

Do you offer a GAMSAT intensive course?

Yes. The 10-hour course can be compressed into a 3-week GAMSAT intensive course before the March or September sitting. The 15-hour course works as a 4 to 6-week intensive that rebuilds Section 3 sciences alongside Section 1 and 2.

We do not recommend cramming GAMSAT prep into under 14 days unless you have an unusually strong sciences base. The exam rewards deliberate practice, not last-minute volume.

What is the difference between GAMSAT tuition and GAMSAT tutoring?

In practice they are the same thing. 'GAMSAT tuition' is the term used in UK and Irish university contexts; 'GAMSAT tutoring' is the term used in Australia, North America and the wider private market. Both describe paid 1-1 instruction in the GAMSAT.

Our 5, 10 and 15-hour packages are private 1-1 GAMSAT tuition: same tutor, same plan, same essay marking, whichever word you prefer.

Do you offer GAMSAT preparation and coaching in India?

Yes. We tutor Indian applicants targeting UK, Irish and Australian graduate-entry medicine through the GAMSAT. Sessions run live online on IST evenings and weekends, with the same top-decile UK GAMSAT tutors you would be matched with from London.

Indian applicants typically pick our 10 or 15-hour preparation course and split the hours across both March and September sittings.

Do you tutor GAMSAT in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth)?

Yes. Our GAMSAT ANZ tutors support applicants in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart and across regional Australia. We also cover New Zealand applicants targeting the University of Auckland. Lessons run on AEST, AWST and NZST.

Australian applicants typically prepare across both the March and September sittings, with Section 3 chemistry being the most-booked focus.

Do you have a Section 1 tutor (S1 specialist)?

Yes. Section 1 has its own technique stack (active reading, inference vs assumption, tone and bias detection) and we assign an S1 specialist tutor on every 10 and 15-hour course. Section 1 tuition typically takes 2 to 4 hours of your overall package.

Standalone S1 tutoring is available within the 5-hour package if your other sections are already strong.

When is the next GAMSAT sitting in the UK?

The GAMSAT runs twice a year: a March sitting and a September sitting. UK registration for the September sitting typically opens in May and closes in mid-July; March registration opens the previous October. Always confirm dates and fees against the official ACER site (gamsat.acer.org) before you book.

The 5, 10 and 15-hour courses are deliberately sized to fit cleanly into either window.

What is the difference between the GAMSAT and the UCAT?

The GAMSAT is a content-heavy 5-hour graduate-entry exam with humanities reasoning (S1), essays (S2) and biological + physical sciences (S3). The UCAT is a 2-hour cognitive aptitude test with no science content, used widely at undergraduate level and at many graduate-entry routes.

Most UK graduate medicine applicants pick a primary route (GAMSAT or UCAT) but apply through both where school requirements allow. We tutor both and will help you map the route on your free strategy call.

Sophie
Medicine, King's College London
2025 UCAT2,590 / 2,700
Harry got my UCAT up to 2,590, working through the sections I kept dropping marks on week by week. Gemma then ran my interview practice so the MMI stations didn't catch me out, and Dr Akash mentored me the whole way through. I'm off to King's for Medicine.
Ultimate Package
Daniel
Medicine, University College London
Medicine offers4 offers
The interview prep was the part that actually moved the needle. Proper mock MMIs, not just lists of questions, and feedback that was honest about what I was getting wrong. I ended up with four offers and firmed UCL.
Ultimate Package
Aisha
Dentistry, University of Birmingham
Dentistry offers4 offers
The Ultimate Package kept me organised from UCAT through to interviews. They knew what dental schools actually ask and tightened up my personal statement. Four offers in the end, and I'm going to Birmingham.
Ultimate Package
Charlotte
Veterinary Medicine, Royal Veterinary College
Vet offers4 offers
Vet applications come down to the written SAQs as much as the interview. Dr Rebecca went through my SAQs line by line, sharpened my answers and prepped me for the panels. I came away with four offers and chose the RVC.
