Overview of The University of Southampton Medical School

Medicine has been taught at Southampton for over 40 years and the university have led on cutting edge research in areas such as cancer, osteoporosis, asthma and nutrition. Southampton continues to lead on innovative learning and discovery across the lifecourse from before birth to the elderly, by investing in multi-disciplinary research teams, creative educational programmes and initiating external partnerships and collaborations.

Southampton University Medicine Course Structure

On this integrated medicine course, you'll study at one of the UK's leading teaching hospitals – University Hospital Southampton – and at our purpose-built Life Sciences facilities on campus. You'll get clinical experience from the first weeks of your course, meeting patients in hospital and primary care settings.

- Year 1 - a wide range of learning and teaching methods is employed including lectures, tutorials, workshops, practical classes and guided self-study using online learning. T
- Year 2 - there is a greater contribution of clinical contact within the Medicine in Practice 2 module including the Health Care Support Worker placement.
- Year 3 - Research Project with progression into clinical practice
- Year 4 - Developing clinical practice, takes place through year 4 over 37 weeks.
- Year 5 - Preparing for independent practice

University of Southampton Medical School Entry Requirements

GCSE

Applicants must hold 6 GCSEs at grade A/7 or above, including mathematics with biology and chemistry, or mathematics with additional science and science or mathematics with combined science.
English language (or GCSE English) is required at a minimum of grade B/6.

A Levels

AAA including Biology and Chemistry (minimum grade A)
A-levels additional information

IB

36 points with 18 at Higher Level, with 6 in HL Chemistry & Biology
International Baccalaureate Diploma additional information
If English Language is not met from GCSEs but is being taken in the IB, Southampton also require IB English Language Syllabus A, Standard Level, Grade 5.

Scottish Higher

Applications where Higher Level subjects have been studied without the full Diploma, will also be considered on a case by case basis.

Course Information

Graduate Entry

Southampton Graduate Medicine Entry Program
- Length: 4 years, full time
- Typical Offer: 2:1

You will study medicine over 4 years and draw on your existing knowledge and experience as train to be a doctor. You'll be part of a small group of graduates embarking on this intensive but rewarding programme. You'll get clinical experience from the first weeks of your course, meeting patients in hospital and primary care settings.

Intercalation

Intercalation at Southampton Medicine

Apply for a master's of medical science at Southampton – or study for a BSc or MSc at another university – between year 3 and year 4 (known as intercalation)

Foundation Year / Gateway 

- University of Southampton Foundation Year Medicine BM6 Widening Participation (BMBS)
- Length: 6 years, full time
- Typical Offer: BBB

This BMBS Medicine BM6 course is designed to widen participation in medicine. For example, you may be able to apply if you or your parent or guardian receive benefits, or you are the first in your family to apply for a higher education course.

Southampton Medicine Interview

Type

- Interview Type: Panel Interview and a group task
- Length: 20minutes and 30minutes
- Preparation time: 5 minutes before the group task

- 5th/6th January – BM5 applicants (6th including Overseas applicants)
- 11/12th February – BM5 applicants (12th including overseas applicants)
- 25th February – BM6 and BM5 applicants (including mature, non-graduate and graduates)
- 28th February – BM5 applicants
- 4th March – BM6 applicants
